Sperry is getting a little sister!
« on: July 01, 2019, 11:15:51 AM »
We've decided to get a sister for our 1 year old little man Sperry.  He's great on his own, not overly needy or anxious, doesn't bark unless around barking dogs.  He absolutely loves other dogs and I think it should be a pretty easy transition for him. A few questions though, would love any feedback or suggestions.

1) Any suggestions on transitioning? She'll also be our first female dog.

2) He still is very naughty with chewing things inappropriately i.e.  eye glasses, sunglasses, headphones, but I'm thinking some of this is due to boredom and having a friend around may actually help.

3) He's on adult dog food, his sister will only be about 5 months old, is this too soon to have her eating adult dog food?

Any help is appreciated!

Hi
Oh, that sounds lovely. I'm sure he will be very happy to have a companion.
I will do some reseach for you and see what I can find out. Unfortunately I can't answer from experience as I only had Toby.
I will get back to you as soon as I find out.
In the mean time may be some of the other members can answer you.
Big hugs for your lovely Shorkies.
Ann

Hi
Just too address your problem with boardom. I found the best thing with Toby was to use a Konk. It is a toy that you can fill with treats and it keeps them occupied for hours trying to get the goodes out. I also left the radio on when I went out so he never felt alone. This might be a good idea even with the new addition.
Check this info out about Changing your puppy to adult food.

Here is some info on introducng your dog to your puppy.

If you click on these link they will take you to artcles that relate to your questions.
My personal opinon about ths is I think they will get on fine as long as you don't make too much fuss over the new puppy. Alway make sure you have time for the older one.
Hope that helps ;)
