Do they make puppy Listerine?
« on: May 23, 2011, 08:42:27 AM »
Anyone know what we can do for our puppies HORRIBLE  :o breath?  Do they make doggie treats with breath fresheners, and if so do they work?  Please help, I love my puppy kisses, but whenever she gets near I want to vomit...LOL  Thanks!

Yes there are various kinds of chewy things you can get for breath. I have these things that I have had hanging around for a long time. I had bought them for my deceased Shih Tzu. I tried giving them to Gracie when she was very young but she wouldn't touch them. She likes them now though. They are called Dingo Dental Sticks. I think I got them at the grocery store. They have baking soda in them that is supposed to help the breath. I don't know if they work because I haven't really had breath problems with Gracie.
There is a website called organicpetboutique.com that has a brushless toothpaste that I am thinking of ordering. It is actually a chew that is supposed to clean teeth and freshen breath. Haven't gotten it yet but there are other chew things that are supposed to help breath. I'm sure others here will know of some. I would look for more on that site and other natural pet product places for a healthy breath product. The Himalayan chew is supposed to work well also. I'm ordering three or four different chew products for her. For some reason she is wanting to chew more now than when she was a baby.

There are breath savers... but if your puppy has bad breath, may be a tooth problem...

Your puppy is still teething, and bad breath is quite normal in teething puppies.

Check all it's teeth & gums to make sure none are impacted (the baby tooth hasn't been pushed out by the adult tooth) or for redness & gum swelling. If all looks OK & puppy is chewing normally, it's probably no big deal.

If you're not sure, or you have a hard time checking, have your vet take a quick look-see in it's mouth. Sometimes a baby tooth gets impacted & will get infected.

Thanks for the info Ann, their teeth look ok to me.  They are going to the vet for a check up next week anyways, so I can always mention it to him.

Gracie just turned 1 year and she is chewing more than she did when she was little so I don't know how much age has to do with it.

They start to lose their milk teeth at about 4-5 months of age, and they are replaced with their permanent adult teeth. You don't always know when they are loosing them as they tend to eat them. When Toby started loosing his I used to find them on the floor when I swept up. I had never experienced this before as other dogs I had never stayed inside so this was my first experience with puppy teeth. I still have some of Toby's teeth in a container just like my childrens sick i know. LO LO HA HA ;D

Haha, I thought it was so gross when my friend told me she kept both her dog's teeth but now we kept the one and only tooth of Charlie's we've found so far. He just started losing them last week, it was so cute when all 4 bottom front teeth were missing! lol

Oh yes! I know exactly what you are talking about! Stinky breath! Kiki has same issue! I can not figure out why!?! I tried everything! Right now we are giving her Tropiclean Fresh Breath drops added into her water. I also bought a gel to brush her teeth with, same brand. It is on a natural base and has no chemicals in it. It would work great if i could remember to add it into every fresh bowl of water. I wonder if there is some sort of permanent treatment? ::)

I should have mentioned this in my last post but completely forgot. We add a tiny half scoop of seaweed to Charlie's food at night. It helps combat bad breath, plaque, & tartar. Seems to work pretty well, he still has puppy breath but not anything like some dogs I've smelt! You should be able to find it at any natural pet store, its made specifically for dogs. The type we have is called Plaque Off, cost about $27 for a small bottle but for small dogs you only need a tiny amount

Good advice Kate, I will look for that stuff.  Their breath has gotten better though since we first picked them up two weeks ago.  So maybe, it is just a temporary thing.   ;)

Does the seaweed take the place of brushing their teeth. At the pet place I go she said they have this stuff to take the place of brushing their teeth. Just sprinkle a tiny bit of it on their food. Costs twenty some dollars for a little jar. I was just wandering if this is the same stuff. I have not tried it yet. Its kind of expensive but if I would not  have to brush Angels teeth it would be worth it

Bad breath can also be caused by worms.  **Just a thought.

Good luck!
