Vomiting After Final Set of Shots
« on: May 14, 2011, 06:26:39 PM »
Hi everyone!
I'm a little worried about my Charlie. We just took him in yesterday at 10:30 AM to the vet to get his final set of shots, we also got the Bordetella and rabies vaccines on top of the other ones. He seemed fine yesterday, a little sleepy, but thats how he was the last times as well. Today however, he has thrown up 3 times (twice were at the same time, the third was about 4 hours later).
I read that vomiting after vaccinations is normal in 24 hours after but it would have been about 30 hours after. Just wondering if anyone thinks this is something to worry about or if this is normal?

Hi, Kate B. Is he still throwing up or has he quit. I didn't go online yesterday or I would have replied then. If he's still throwing up then I would go to the vet. I hope your little guy is feeling better. Angel's tummy didn"t feel well this morning but after passing gas and going poop I think sheis starting to feel better. Let me know how he's doing. It's always a worry isn't it.

I hope by now the vomiting has stopped.  If it continues, I would call the vet to get his/her opinion.  Good luck and let us know how it goes.

With Stormy I'm pretty sure the vet told me that throwing up wasn't normal and to take her in if she threw up. I suggest you call the vet.

Yes I would definatley ring your vet and make sure as Charlie might be having a bad reaction. Just like children they react to the vacinations but sometime they can react badly. I'm not saying this is what has happened but it is alway better to check to be on the safe side. I do hope Charlie gets better and love to know how he is going. :'(

Sorry everyone! I came on Monday to update everyone, but must have got distracted! I thought I had updated, oops!!
Charlie is back to his normal, playful self now! Unfortunately, we did have to take him to the emergency vet & they checked him out, couldn't really find anything wrong with him but said it could be from his nylabone. Apparently they can get stuck in the digestive tract upsetting dogs tummys. So we've thrown that out and he is taking an anti-emetic for the next few days. They said if he's still throwing up then we'll have to bring him in for x-rays and blood tests; but from what I've seen the last few days I think he'll be okay!
Thanks for all the suggestions & well wishes, it's very much appreciated!!

I was just reading the post. So glad to hear he is doing better. These little ones do need a bit more care than a regular dog. There are more natural things available for your dog to chew on. There is a thing called a bully stick and they are made out of parts of the cow. Dogs are able to digest all of it and lots of pet owners swear by them. There is another thing that a lot of Yorkie owners like called a Himalayan Yak chew. You can find them on Amazon and at some natural dog stores. They are made out of some sort of cheese product. They last a very long time and don't have the slight order that the bully stick has. Both items come in different sizes. I stay away from rawhide because of the fact it can sit undigested in your dogs stomach and cause awful problems. Pig ears are another option that some dogs like.
Sorry for going on so long.

Oh !!! It's soooooooooo great to hear that Charlie is ok. You have made mine and Toby's day. We're so happy. Please give Charlie a big hug from us. You know we think of all our members and dogs as our family and it breaks our heart to hear of them getting sick or hurt.  :'(

Thanks ellie! I'll definitely check those out! I have heard of the bully stick, my friend, who also has a shorkie, says her dog loves them!
Since my boyfriend and I are new to not only the shorkie world but the dog owner world as well we're still trying to figure it out! But after what happened I'm definitely going all natural!!

I highly recommend getting bully sticks. They're bull penises ha ha, but Stormy loves them. One of our pet stores here also sells "cow tails" - they're made from the same company that makes the bully sticks (at least in this store) and they're cheaper and don't smell as bad so I usually opt for those - Storms loves them just the same. They are amazing things to get. When Stormy is being too hyper for her own good, I'll give it to her and she ignores everyone while she's chewing on it ha. It's the best puppysitter :P

Glad Charlie is ok.  They can scare you sometimes.  Mai Tai once ate a cat toy, and I was in a panic until he vomited most of it up after about a day.  He was so sick from it.  He also once at a headless mole, but that is another story...yuck.
