My Big Boy Charlie
« on: May 07, 2011, 12:27:50 PM »
Here's the latest pictures of Charlie. He's now 16 weeks old. At 12 weeks he weighed 9lbs - so I think he's going to be very big as I've heard that as a general rule they double their 12 week weight!.......... That would put his adult size at 18lbs. WOW! Has anybody else got such a BIG shorkie!??!

I think he's gorgeous whatever size he ends up  ;D

Oh how neat he is just gorgeous, love the black.  Mine is supposed to get to be about 6-8 lbs. guess it all depends on how big their Mother and Father were.

I have seen Shorkies of various sizes. It does depend on the size of the parents. Did you get to see his mom? My girl's mom was 9 pounds and her dad was 8 pounds. At 11 months she is 4.5 pounds. She was the smallest of the litter of 2. Sometimes the size of the litter can tell you a lot. A tiny mother dog is not going to have more than 2 pups, 3 at the most. A small dog could have up to 4. Most Yorkie breeders that show their dogs are breeding for very small dogs but the size of Yorkies used to be up to 20 pounds and even more years back. My male Shih Tzu was 13 pounds full grown. He gained a pound in his later years but I think he was an average sized male Shih Tzu at the time. He went on to the doggy life beyond in Dec of 2009 at the age of 15.
Your Charlie is a handsome guy. Usually by the time a dog is 6 months old they are very close to being full grown though they do have some more weight to put on. I don't think it matters how big Charlie gets he is still going to be a cutie.

What a doll!  I don't think he will double in size, as smaller dogs usually reach most of their size by 6 months.  That said, Minnie was 3.5 at 12 weeks and she is now a whopping 7.5.  I love your dog!!

Tracy, I have to say I think he will be about 18 or more.  Mai Tai was 6 lbs at 13 weeks and is now 16.4 lbs at almost three years.  He kept growing up until about 14 months old.  Mo is tiny and stopped growing around 11 months old.  I think Charlie could reach 20 lbs.  Big or small though, we love them all.

My Raley weighs 9lbs at 17 months....my daughter's little Ellie only weighs 4 lbs 13ozs at 10 months.  They come in all shapes and forms but they are so cute that the size doesn't matter!

I am brand new to your forum, but not new to the world of Shorkies. I am a mother to 3 of these furry babies. We had always owned large dogs such as Afghans & Goldens. Our last Golden died of cancer, and we had gone a couple of years without a dog. When my son was a senior in high school I felt the need to have another dog. My husband really didn’t want another dog to tie us down. Fortunately he stumble upon a litter of Shorkies, and he thought this would satisfy my need for a dog. He was not interested at all in such a small dog; little did he know this puppy was going to rock both our world.

My oldest is Hercules and he is now  4 ½ years old, my middle child is Aphrodite (Ditee) and she will be 3 years old next month, our newest baby is Calypso (Callie) and she is just 12 weeks old today. We adopted all three from different breeders, and the whole family loves each one unconditionally.

Hercules was 13 weeks when we adopted him and he was about 2 3/4lbs. We were told he would not get much bigger than 5lbs. His father was the Yorkie and weighed 2lbs and mom was 5lbs. Today Hercules weighs just under 14lbs, and no he is not over weight.

Ditee was about 12 weeks when we adopted her, and she weighed 2.5lbs. I don’t know about her parents weight, but we were told she wouldn’t grow to be much bigger than 5lbs. Ditee now weighs 9lbs.

Callie now weighs 2.2lbs, and yes we were told she shouldn’t grow to be bigger that 5lbs. Her father was the Yorkie and weighed 3lbs and mom weight 5lbs. We have no idea how big she will get, but we are sure it will be more than 5lbs ; ).

Really Yorkie breeders have very little consistency in size because they all carry genes from the larger size the Yorkies originally were. I think the last decade the show breeders have been trying to pear down the size but it takes many generations of consistent breeding and then they may still have some larger dogs in a litter. Male Shih Tzu's have always been quite a bit larger than the females and yet I have seen some big Shih Tzu females. Putting the two blood lines together is going to bring a mixed bag. I would think that usually those who breed the "designer" dogs probably don't have stock that has many generations of breeding to miniaturize the stock. Besides that a small dog may carry genes that will produce larger dogs. It's hit and miss at best.
I used to breed and show Himalayan cats and that was a hair pulling genetic nightmare just dealing with purebreds. Throw in another breed and you just lose any genetic regularity you have achieved.

I have 2 Shorkie brothers, Max & Mason.. Max is huge (almost 19 lbs!!) and Mason is tiny (about 4 or 5 lbs!).  If I wouldn't have seen then them at the breeder together as tiny pups, I wouldn't believe that they were related, its so funny!
