Angels floppy ear
« on: April 25, 2011, 06:53:39 AM »
I need a little help here. i had a horrible Easter. Starting out Angel was tired because I woke up at 3.00 o'clock in the morning in Easter and when I wake up Angel has to get up because her cage is beside our bed.  Getsworse from there. We went out to my parents house. Big family. They held Angel constantly which she was getting tired of. And they rough house with her and got her all riled up. And my sister has a yorkie poo and they get along so so. She got pretty angry sometimes and then my neice got tired of her and threw her off the couch.  This is what I'm really upset about is she was running for the front door to get outsideIumped up to get her and I couldn"t get her in time and her neck got caught between the storm door. She yelped but seemed alright. But now her ear won't stand up straight. One ear does. both did before this happened. I wonder if she could have gotton some nerve damage to her ear. I camed home and cried. Her ear still isn't standing up. What if this is peramanent. This would make me sick. I don,t know if I should call the vet but what can he do? I hope everybody else had a better Easter. Now they think Angel is hyper but she was just exhausted. She came home and slept four hours and then slept all night. She usually isn't like this.

Maybe she has some cartilage damage to the ear, (don't even know if dogs have cartilage there) but I would go to the vet.  They can tape the ear up.  That is what they do to Yorkies whose ears flop forward when they should stand up.  Not sure if it would work at this point.  So sorry you had such a rough time.  Hope it works out well.

Actually, I think taping the ear up only works on puppies whose cartilage is still soft.  Once it is done growing, I don't think tape would work.  Let us know what the vet says.

I taped up her ear for about three hours and then I decided to call the vet. He said to give her half a baby aspirin for three or four days and see if it helps. If it doesn't help he said there is nothing else that can be done and her ear is going to stay floppy forever. I cried somemore. But I'll love her any way she is. Thanks for helping. I'll keep you updated.

Aww I'm sorry. I know how hard it is to watch other people not be as careful with your puppy as you want them to be. Is her ear doing any better? Maybe try calling the breeder and see what they suggest. Vets know a lot, but the breeder knows that particular breed more than the vet a lot of the time.

I just wanted to update on Angels ear. That night I prayed If the one ear won't come up let the other one go down. Tuesday morning they were both down. Sometimes she puts her good ear up but usually leaves it down. Her bad ear goes up a little sometimes. I don't know whats going on. This is weird. I love her any way she is. I didn't reply sooner because of all the rain were having our computer was at 2.4.

Is it possible that sometimes as they grow the ears go down, and it has nothing to do with the fall?  I am going to look it up.

From what I can see, it says a lot of Yorkies' ears flop and go back up through teething.  Also, they can flop if you don't keep their ear hair trimmed because of the extra weight.  That does not make a lot of sense to me because how much can hair weigh?  Anyway, just thought I would let you know.  Mo's ears flop and I think it is cuter than pointy ears, but that is a personal preference, and I certainly would not want to see my dog hurt to get such a result.  Mai Tai has Shih-tzu ears that lay down against the sides of his head.

I don't think you should be taking your puppy to a place where children do not know any better than to mistreat a puppy. My kids were taught from an early age that they were to respect all creatures and especially those smaller than them. That dog must have suffered some real pain to have that much damage done to her ear. If there is swelling you could put some ice packs on it for a few seconds at a time but there really isn't much else you can do now. Most Shorkies that I have seen have floppy ears.

Ellietoo It was an accident with the door. Actually my bother went out the door and he didn"t know Angel was following her. I ran for her but I couldn't get to her in time. At my husbands parents house I held her all day and that was fine with her but at my parents house my sisters yorkiepoo was running around and she wanted down. My brother felt very bad about it. He still asks all the time how she's doing. Her neck isn't swollen. She seems just as active as before and thats very active. She gets her bad ear up straight every once in awhile. So I don't know if the door did this or not. She usually lets her ears flop. And I was looking pictures of adult shorkies up and their ears do flop. Maybe she just experimeted putting them up and their supposed to be down. The neice that threw her on the floor is twenty years old. She was the one I was ticked at. But if you would see how her Mom acts then you would know. By the way your dog is adorable.

I have not seen an adult shorkie with pointy ears.  Has anyone else?  I am sure a few must exist if they inherited it from the yorkie side.  Quite a few yorkies have floppy ears also.

Well, I just hope the little dog is OK. I can't imagine anyone being mean to a dog but I know that there are many out there that do much worse. I know that some with full bred Yorkies have some problems with the ears staying up. Breeders have to keep some of the puppies ears shaved in order to help them stand up. I guess some of them don't have strong enough cartilage in their ears as they need in order to stand up like they should. I have seen some full blooded Yorkies that have floppy ears. It happens. Gracie's ears have a strong base but flop at about a third of the way up. I think they are one of the cutest parts on her because she is so expressive with them. One is just a little bit higher than the other. When I speak to her she looks up at me and moves her ears as she listens. It cracks me up every time.
I have to say I would have been hysterical if my baby was injured in anyway as well. She is 11 months old now and  still less than 5 pounds so when young children come to visit I keep a close eye on them with her. Being so small she just needs a little extra protection. Even the cat could hurt her if he wanted to. Actually she was slightly injured when she fell off my bed while wrestling with a kitten when she was about 2 months old. I had to take her to the vet because she wouldn't put weight on one of her rear legs. She recovered well and didn't break anything but now I am a maniac about protecting her. She has her own set of steps to get up and down off the bed and I'd hate to tell you all the other things I have bought for her.

ellie, you sound like me.  Mo, at almost 2 yrs. is only 3 lbs. 12 oz., so I am always concerned he can get hurt.  He thinks he is much bigger, and we have steps for him too so he can get on the couch and the bed.  He also hurt a leg in a jump off of the couch when he was very young, and I freaked out and raced to the vet.  It was only a sprain, thank God.  These little ones need extra protection, especially from themselves.

The smaller they are the easier it is for them to get hurt. When I first started looking into getting a puppy, I didn't want one that would get over 5 pounds. Stormy has surpassed that weight ha but I'm sooo glad she has. I didn't realize how small 5 pounds was. I was a mess! Always worrying about her. Literally crying when she wouldn't eat bc I was afraid she would get hypoglycemia. She was just too fragile. She's still small and the little brat loves to go under the couch so I'm afraid of her getting hurt by doing that, but it's a lot less stressful now that she's bigger. Hopefully she grows a little more!
