Pig Snort
« on: February 22, 2011, 10:47:07 AM »
Weird thread title, I know, but that's the best way I can describe the noise Stormy made yesterday. I took her on a walk and she had only been walking for maybe one minute when she started making weird sounds...it sounded like she couldn't breathe...like a pig snorting. I immediately picked her up and took her harness off in case it was too tight (it does fit her more snug than it used to, but I have no problem getting it on her over her clothes...could this have possibly caused it?) and it lasted for about 30 seconds. I was FREAKING out. I remember reading someone on here talking about losing a dog due to a trachea collapse and my mind immediately jumped to that. After she stopped I put her back on her leash/harness and she went on a 20 minute walk without any problems. I text her breeder and she said sometimes they swallow wrong and it causes them to hack. One of my friends said maybe she has asthma. I was walking her with a friend and she had her 2 dogs with her, one of which sheds and Stormy was walking behind him, and she said maybe it was a furball. One of her dogs has hair balls and she said that's what her dog sounds like, but Stormy never got anything out. I'm probably overreacting bc I'm watching her EVERY move now but she seems so lethargic to me. Stormy is my shadow and I took a break while writing this to leave the room and she just stayed on her bed and didn't follow me...she never does that! She's supposed to get spayed next week and now I don't know if I should do it. Has anyone ever experienced their shorkie making a sound like this?

My dogs have made that noise many many times.  In almost every case, it was simply a reverse sneeze.  Look it up on the internet, and see if it describes what happened.  Only one time was it worse, and that was when Mai Tai had kennel cough, but in that case, it kept happening throughout the day, and he had a runny nose with it.  Don't worry, and I hope for the best for you.
