Stormy's Quick Was Cut :(
« on: October 09, 2010, 10:44:05 PM »
I am so upset. So my friend took her dog to my breeder to have her dog groomed..I took Stormy so she could play with her parents and siblings. I asked Stormy's breeder to cut her nails bc they were getting long and so she did. I brought her home around 4 pm and on the 20 or so minute car ride home she was fine. I put her in the playpen almost immediately as we had plans and I was gone for 3 hours. When I came back home there were drips of dried blood all over the pee pad in her playpen and the playpen itself. At first I thought she pooped and stepped on it, but it was red. Turns out the BREEDER cut her quick. I FREAKED the f out. I started bawling my eyes out and handed her to my friend bc I couldn't look at Stormy bc her paw was all bloody :( It even got on her dress :( I am so heartbroken for her. My friend had to clean her off and her sister-in-law told her to put flour on it (not sure why, I couldn't even be in the same room while they were treating her, I'm such a bad mom) but Stormy didn't cry or anything. She let them clean her up and then ate and she SEEMS fine. She's walking ok and scratching the playpen when I put her in it which I wish she wouldn't do bc I don't want her to hurt herself. I'm so pissed, though. My friends said when the quick is cut it gushes blood immediately so there's no way her groomer wouldn't know it was cut, and Stormy would have cried yet she didn't even tell me it was cut. I text her telling her it was and she said "Sorry, she was pulling away a lot" umm ok. This has been one of my biggest fears about getting a dog and I swore I would never cut the nails myself bc I didn't want this to happen but it did anyway and from her breeder of all people. Ugh!

Calm down. It's ok.  It can and does happen with any dog.  They will not bleed to death.  What I don't understand is why the breeder did not put anything on it to stop it.  You didn't see any blood on your drive home?  It is quite messy. She had to be bleeding then.  A quick starts to bleed immediately, once cut.  I did it on my Golden Retrievers more than once.  And I sure knew it when it happened.  And the dog does yelp, usually just once as the quick is cut.  After it is cut, it does not hurt them.
Only thing I would ask the breeder is if she had put something on her when it first happened.  It is possible she did but Stormy may have played around and aggravated it.  Jemma is horrible with her nails getting done.  Like a wild animal.  My son is here so later I will be attacking her.

Yes, It's happened to all of us, I'm sure.  I don't cut mm's nails because the first time I did it I cut the quick, and boy did she bleed and boy did I cry and belittle myself for being a poor mother.  There's a product to stop the bleeding like styptic powder and I'll be the groomer put some one which is why she didn't bleed till you got home, but she SHOULD have at least told you.  SInce then, I get the vet to do it.  Even cheaper than the groomer and he does a slapdunk job.

I am very glad this has never happened to either of my dogs, but I once did it to my cat.  I felt awful, and now only the vet cuts my cat's nails, though I really should try it again.  My cat is not clever enough to scratch his nails on one of the many scratching posts we provide.

I know these things happen-, but what bothers me is that she didn't even tell me. And she made it seem like she didn't know, but I don't know how she wouldn't have noticed. Anyway, Stormy seems to be fine so that's all that matters. But now I don't know if I want to take her back there to be groomed. She had so much fun playing with her siblings, though. I'm happy she got in some dog play time since her overprotective and paranoid mom won't let her play with other dogs  :P
