Hi
Can anyone give me some tips on how to stop Toby from getting so excited when I have visitors. When they come in he just jumps all over them.

HELP!!

Thanks Ann

Hello.  My shorkie can also be a little too excited to meet new friends, so from an early age I started trying to keep her calm.   I have her trained so that when I put her on her bed,  she stays there, until I call her out.  If she is being too bouncy and excited I just put her in her bed for a few minutes and when I let her out she is calm and relaxed, even with the new people still in our home.

Ok I will give that a go. He is very easy to teach but when it comes to this he just seems to loose all consentration.
I do appreciate your advise.

Hi Ann, you should really watch the Dog Whisperer, or pick up a book by Cesar Millan as he deals with this issue often.  He says that we, as pack leaders, have to have a calm assertive energy and control the space around the door as people come in.  We must make our dogs be in a calm submissive state and not let them run at the door.  IF the dog tries to run to the door, we must correct him or her with a SHHHT sound and make them sit or lay down BEFORE going to open the door and do not allow the dog to follow you to the door.  IF the dog goes to jump on the person, we must correct them again and be consistent until they learn to be submissive to us.  Dogs need a pack leader or they will try to become the pack leader.  He says it is fine for a dog to smell visitors to our home, but not bark at them and jump up on them.  Anyway, it all sounds a lot easier than it is to do I am sure, but he really is amazing with dogs.  Good Luck.

Thank you for your advise and I'm trying to get the book but as yet still have not been able to get it locally. As far as the show goes, could you tell me if that is an Australian show as I live in Australia. If it is what time is it on and what channel as I will definetly watch it,

Thank you again.  :D

Hi Ann,

No, I get it on the National Geographic channel on cable.  Cesar Millan has a website though, so maybe you can see if it runs in Australia at any time.  Just google the name and you can find the website.  Take care.

It might also be worth it since just from watching here and there before I got Rowan and now as regularly as I can since I got Rowan (she loves to watch Dog Whisperer with me  ;D lol) Ceasar really knows his stuff. I seem to remember adds for his DVD's when watching the show. You might try going to the National Geographic website and see if they sell his DVD's that way you wouldn't have to hunt for the channel and time its on in Australia. Just a thought (if you already thought of this sorry  ;) its late and I only get a few hours sleep at a time these days so I tend to not make sense lol but we are finally getting better at potty training so its all worht it  :D I just have to invest in some really good under eye concealer)

Thank you. I know what you mean about lack of sleep. I'm dog sitting a friends dog at the moment and not getting much sleep at all. Not that he is missbehaving he is just missing mum and is very restless. Toby is just at him all the time if the poor dog comes any where near me Toby starts jumping all over him, and gets between me and the other dog. Iguess it is stressful for Toby as well. The two dogs are friends. If I go any where Toby stays with his owner.

Rowan is great and we have play time and relax time but she absolutley will not let me out of her sight period not even for a second. she will be fast asleep and if i roll over in bed (we are crate training and her crate is on my bedside table so when she has nightmares i can comfort her without having to get out of bed) and happens to ppek n not be able to see me over the covers she starts whining n quietly barking. i don't let her in the garage since ther are spiders in there bigger than her lol n the entire time i am in there doing laundry she is barking like a lunatic . i'm seriously concerned cuz i have an overnight medical test tuesday and didn't realize that my mom was going to be out of town and i'm kinda new in town so don't really know anyone and the few i do i really don't trust to come over to my house when i'm not home. i don't know what i'm going to do with Rowan cuz i don't wanna stress her out so of course i'm stressing out HAHA

I was wondering if maybe you can ask your vet. My vet will house dogs for reasons like yours or sometimes their nurses will takecare of your dog for the night. I'm sure if you ask your vet they will know of someone. :)
