Tear Duct Staining
« on: September 01, 2010, 07:41:07 AM »
Daisy did not have any staining until a little 'friend' came over to play, who did have staining.  Now she has it too.
I also am determining that Daisy has allergies, which may be from feeding her Eukanuba.  It was cheaper, so I caved and started buying it.  She developed the staining after she had been on Eukanuba for two months.  She has been scratching herself raw on her nose area too, which is where that staining is located.
I have switched to a better food, with no corn or wheat.  We shall see if it helps her open sores on her nose and maybe clear up the staining.  I am using Vaseline on her 'owwies' on her nose. Any thoughts?

Hi drazzle,
Unfortunately thses dogs do have allergy problems especially with food. So you have made the right decision about changing the food. As far as the sores and rashes go the vaseline may not clear it up so you may have to go to the vets to get a cream to heal it. I did that with Toby so that is why I have said this. I'm sure your baby will be fine once you have sorted it out. Good Luck. :)

Thank God my dogs don't seem to have any allergies, though they have always had tear staining.  It does not bother me since their hair on their faces is dark, so the stains are not as noticeable.  The only problem I have is they are very picky eaters.  I have tried a few foods and they don't seem to like anything very much.  They usually won't eat unless I give them some boiled chicken mixed in with the food.  I probably have spoiled them.

My favorite person at a local pet store told me Daisy is SO PICKY with her food because of the Shi Tsu in her.  This new food is a beef and barley mix, and she suggested I mix it with a little warm water.  I had been using a little milk or cottage cheese to tempt her and she said our 'mix' is lactose intolerant.  I didn't know that one either.
She said several clients with Shi Tsu's have to have two foods, and feed them one kind in the morning and the either in the evening to keep them eating.
Day 6 with the new food.

The Shih Tzu is the real culprit in the eye staining.  Not all dogs will take after the Shih Tzu because we have Yorkie in there as well.  JMHO

For staining I read sometimes it's better to give bottled water instead of water from tap, I actually do give him bottled and his staining is slight.
