Jealousy!!
« on: May 14, 2010, 02:30:46 PM »
My shorkie gets so jealous!! its cute! but sometimes its a problem. If my husband and I ever hug or lay on the couch together Rascal has to jump right up between us and try to look all cute with his big eyes. He cant be alone. He has to be with me every second. One time my mom and sisters came to visit with the new baby. Whoever was holding the baby would get rascals undivided attention. He would jump up behind them on the couch and start scratching there head with his paws.. Then one time my mom was rubbing my back and Rascal growled at her the whole time and used his paw to contiuaslly scratch her leg. Is anyone elses shorkie this possesive of them. When he was a baby everytime i left the room he would cry till I came back for about the first two weeks i had him. It didnt matter if my husband or kids were there, he had to be able to see me. Its really cute but its probably not good to train them to be so possesive..well not really training him to be possesive, just not teaching him not to be. If im here on my computer he has to be sitting right next to me. He just needs so much attention! But I love him for it..

Kami, it is cute, but your shorkie is telling you he OWNS you, which is not great, especially the growling at your mom part.  That kind of behavior could lead to a nip. I was having a similar problem with mine, he kept barking and jumping on my oldest daughter if she rough housed with her sisters or laughed too loud.  He was trying to be the boss, or pack leader over her.  We nipped it right in the bud by having her walk him and lead him, and by discipling him for barking at her.  I know it is hard because they are so cute, but it is really important, especially when you have a lot of kids around, like I do.

shorkies are known to be quite possessive.  Mine is not jealous, but she will not eat if someone is taking care of her, and usually won't poop either.  If I am in the room, she sticks to me like glue.  Maybe if you could leave Rascal with someone else for a few days, that might break him of the habit.  Have you taken him to socialization classes?  That really helped with Minnie Mee

oops, I meant disciplining, not discipling in my last post.

Ya that is a good idea! I will try and find something like that. He does lead a very sheltered life. He is never around other dogs and we have no small children so he gets all the attention. I am really enjoying talking to all of you on this site! Thanks
