Leaving Daisy all day for the first time...very sad
« on: April 21, 2010, 05:29:52 AM »
Today is the first day that Daisy will be in her crate all day. :'(  She is 15 weeks.  What do all of you do with your babies all day?  I left a few toys in her crate, and even left the TV on with the volume down low.  The breeder sent instructions home with me and stated that leaving the dogs in crates is cruel.  She suggests the wire pen instead.  I am afraid Daisy would try crawling up, get caught somehow, get her collar caught, whatever.

I leave my dog in the wire enclosure, and she's happy....dogs don't need a lot of space... she's never gotten so near the enclosure as to get trapped.  I think the most important thing is to realize dogs are not people, so don't try to empathize.  But no, I wouldn't leave a dog in a crate all day; it would be too close to its own excrement.

Here's the perfect answer for you.  I purchased this and it was the very best investment I made.  It even has a attached floor that just wipes clean.  I kept this in my living room while I was gone all day.  This way she could see everything, even the windows, birds in the tree, lol.  I put a pee pad in there, toys, some water, they need that and she was great!!!  Because she is young please leave her water. is all screen so no worry about her being too hot.  Oh, I even put her small bed in it.  She was set to go.  It folds up totally flat and has a storage case if you need to bring it with you.
Forgot to add because I am gone all day, Jemma is pee pad trained.  So for me putting a pee pad in there was a good thing.  Now that she is able to stay free to roam in the house all day, she automatically goes to her pee pad when she has to go.  I stand corrected, she is not allowed in the bedrooms, I shut those doors, haha

I have had to leave Kuma in his crate (larger carrier) for up to 7 hours.  I put in is bed, toys, small amount of food and water and place it under our kitchen table.  He likes that he can see out the front, he feels secure, plus the cats can't get onto the top like they would a wire crate and bug him, LOL.  We try to do this as little as possible, but sometimes we don't have a choice and I truly think he likes it better than the laundry room, where he is isolated and would cry and scratch at the door (which is out off the garage area).  The pee pads in the house have never worked for him, he did use them in the laundary room, but I felt like that make it seem like it was OK to could go in the house, which is what I don't want.  I think it is a personal choice for each person and your dog.

;D  Thanks Jemma's mom!  I just bought the play yard, and I am just thrilled.  Thank you for providing the website, as I went online and ordered it.  Perfect answer.  I like how it travels well, as I go back and forth between houses.
Thanks everyone.  I LOVE THIS SITE!!!!!

Shorkiejem, Jemma must be an angel.  My boys would have that play yard chewed through in about 1 hour.  How do you keep her from chewing it?  Whenever I leave the house, I have to spray bitter apple on the legs of my rocking chair and desk to keep Mo from having a feast.  Mai Tai, thank God, grew out of this habit.  I provide plenty of chew toys and bones for Mo, but he prefers to chew things I have to pay lots of money for...LOL

The play yard is amazing!!!  I am absolutely thrilled with it.  I tiptoed into the house yesterday and watched her playing in her new house.  I put her in the play yard last night when I had people over.  She watched us, played in it, and slept when she got tired.
I love how it looks too.  I bought the pink one.  It collapses and goes into a bag I can carry, so I will be taking this when I travel too.  Thank you again for this wonderful tip!

Actually the size I got would be more then enough for three dogs.  They would pile on each other to sleep anyway, and it gives them room to play too.  Good idea.
