Spaying/Neutering
« on: August 15, 2008, 10:25:37 AM »
Sadie (5mo old) just got spayed yesterday.  This post isn't so much a question, more of a statement but, it is so sad to see her in pain.  She growls and whines everything we touch her and it breaks my heart to see my baby like this.  I know that it is for the best, but...  :'(

Also, she has been having trouble poo'ing and just seems miserable.  How long will it be before she is back to normal??  I can't help but feel guilty for putting her through so much pain...  :-[

She also had 7 baby teeth pulled and was also microchipped.

Eepuni, I hope your little Sadie feels better. I know what you mean about feeling guilty. I stepped on my Luigi once by accident and he let out a little cry. I think I hugged him and apologized for a good ten minutes before I let him go. Hang in there, I know Sadie will be back to normal in no time. And you did do it with her best interest in mind. Good luck!

Luigi is also about 5 months, so I'm approaching the time to get him neutered. Can anybody let me know what to expect? And what is a cone?

Thanks,
Lisa

thank you luigi and stacey for your support :)

as for the cone, it's literally this cone shaped collar that goes around your dog's head to prevent him/her from licking or biting at their stitches.  Not all dogs need it, but some do and it is quite sad to see your dog in a cone.  When we brought Sadie home from the vet they put one on just as a precaution, and she gave us the saddest look in the world.  We took it off once we got home and she hasn't really been licking or biting at her stitches.  Hopefully Luigi won't be needing the cone.

Benji is getting neutered next week, I took the whole week off so I could stay home with him in case he needs that cone. My other dog Max had to have his on for ten days. He had such a hard time even getting a drink of water. Benji is pretty rambunctious (sp?) so it will be interesting to see if he settles down at all. Max turned into a totally different dog and he was almost four when he was fixed.

Hello,

My Luigi was just neutered this past Tuesday and I have to say it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I was literally in tears when the Vet took him away from me. But he was just fine when I picked him up. He was walking ok except for having that cone in the way. He was still able to eat and drink his water. He just had to learn to maneuver it. Luigi only had the cone on for one day cuz he kept wiggling his way out of it. So I put some gauze and a little tape around the area so he wouldn't lick or fuss with it and now he's healing just fine. I'm so happy!

Good luck with Benji! He's lucky to have such a caring parent! =)

Glad Luigi is ok.  I am getting Mai Tai this coming Sunday, but he won't be fixed for a few months yet.  May I ask how much it cost, if that is not offensive to you?  I know that neutering my male cat cost 58 dollars, but my female cost around 300, due to some complications.  I know females always cost more than males, but have no idea how much it costs to neuter a male dog.  I can't imagine it should be much more than a cat, especially as the dog is smaller than my cat was at the time of neutering.  I am just trying to plan ahead.  I know I can ask my vet, but I was just trying to do a little comparison to see if my vet's is more expensive or cheaper than the average.  In general, my vet has been very good price-wise.  Anyway, I am so glad it all worked out well for you.  Good luck.

I'm glad to hear Luigi did so well. I'm pretty nervous about Benji. I hope he doesn't have to wear that cone. I remember Max was really good when I picked him up afterwards. How long did Luigi have to stay? :-\ They told me they will keep Benji overnight unless he's not eating then they'll send him home because they figure he's more comfortable and will eat. I'm in Canada and it costs $180.00 for the operation plus taxes. It get's pretty expensive especially when you have more than one to Neuter/Spay. It's worth it though ;D.

I had Toby Neutered it cost me $78 in Australia it is cheaper to get a male done than a female but they are talking about making it compulsary that all pet shops and breeders have the pups desexed. How they are doing this is that when you purchase your pup from the shop you are given a voucher to go to your vet when your pup is old enough and have him or her neutered. This is a good idea but it makes the purchase of the pups expensive.

When I had Toby done I left him at the vets in the morning and picked him up in the evening. He was fine, he slept that night and the next day you wouldn't know he had had an operation. I took him back to the vets a week later to get the sitches out and everything was fine. Oh he did try to lick the stiches, I just told him "leave it" and he left them.

Hi all!  Well it's been two months since Sadie's spaying, and happy to say she's good and healed :)  her skin's all healed, but i think i can still feel her internal stitches sometimes.  However, i'm sure those will go away on their own soon enough.  She's still pretty hyper and runs around a lot.  I was afraid that after her surgery she wouldn't act like a puppy anymore, but that hasn't been the case :)

In Chicago, it cost around $500 to get her spayed, but that included extra blood work and medications, just for precautionary reason.

Well Mai Tai has been neutered and I feel guilty too about his pain.  He was only groggy and out of sorts for a day, but I still felt bad.  The vet gave me pain meds for him for 4 days and we are only on day 2.  He wore the cone for an afternoon but could not get comfortable nor eat with it on, so we took it off.  He licks his stitches occassionally, but not enough to make me put that cone back on.  Poor baby was walking forward and the cone hit the cabinets so he could not move forward, but his head was inside the cone, so he did not realize what was going on and kept trying to walk forward.  It was cute but sad.  He would not poop all day either, which I imagine is because he did not eat much yesterday, so I am not going to worry about it just yet.  If he doesn't go by afternoon tomorrow I will call the vet.  I don't know how you all do this with female dogs as it is so much more involved and painful.  I give you credit.

Thanks for listening, just feel bad and wanted to share with people who I know will understand.

Hi

Don't feel bad you really have done the best thing for him and you. He will be a better behaved dog  and you won't have him occasionally spraying on floor or furniture spreading his sent. He is less likely to stray as he will no longer feel the urg to find a female.

These and a lot more reasons are why it was the best thing.

Take Care
Ann

Thanks Ann.  He is doing a lot better today, and seems more himself, though the pain meds make him a little sleepy.  He just trusts us so much, I hated to hurt him, though I knew it was for the best.

my roxy got spayed today... dropped her off early in the morning and picked her up around 5pm. she was so cute when we picked her up, she was acting like nothing happened. she was wagging her tail and licking my boyfriend and i like crazy. the vet said she was hyper before and after the surgery. always knew she was one tough cookie!! she's been sleeping ever since we got home, she groans every once in a while... she has a really hard time getting comfortable. when she looks at us, she looks so sad like she is in so much pain. she hasn't eaten at all yet... how long did it take before your pup's had their appetite?? she hardly ever has accidents anymore, but she looked like she needed to get off the couch, so i set her on the floor and she just squatted and pee'd for like 2 minutes. i couldn't bare to yell at her after all she had been through today. can't wait for her to feel better!!

My Toby didn't take long at all to get over his op but he is a male and the female op is a bigger op so I would thnk it could take up to 4 to 5 days. I wouldn't go mad at her if you think she needs to go I personally would pick her up and take her to where you wish her to do her business at least untill you are sure she is able to go on her own. Dogs are pritty stong creatures they seem to take pain extremely well. I would be pampering her for at least a couple of days.

Please give her a big hug for me!!!! :D
