Should I neuter Mo now or try to breed him once because everyone I know wants one of him?

Well I guess that is not going to work out then as I am in NJ.  A lot of my mom 's family originated in Newfoundland though, and settled in Stony Creek.  Too bad we can't get the dogs together and make some adorable puppies.

Mo will be eight months old on January 18th.  The vet does not want to neuter him yet, as he is only 3 lbs 13 oz.  They would rather wait until he is over 4 pounds if they can, though they are not sure he will get that big.  I am really considering mating him and getting a female from the resulting litter, as I have 2 males.  My older male, Mai Tai is a year and a half old and is neutered.  So many people by me want shorkies, but they are not bred around here at all, as far as I know.  I know some people have bought theirs in NY, but I cannot find a breeder near me at all.

The only thing I would suggest is to make sure there is no hereditory aillments with both dogs otherwise it could mean heartake for all.
If everything is ok thing go for it. :D

I know Ann, that is my concern too.  Mo has an open fontanel, as did his dad and mom.  The vet says they are perfectly healthy, and his mom and dad's fontanels closed.  Lots of Chihuahuas have open fontanels too, but I don't want to pass on a trait that might hurt the puppies.  I know an open fontanel with water on the brain is a VERY serious condition, but Mo's brain is just fine.  The vet says it is a very common condition in very small dogs.

Karen first of all please excuse my spelling!!!LOL

I believe that if the vet dosen't think it is an issue then it is really your choice. You can not know with any litter what is going to happen so I guess it is a risk that all breeders take. Another thing is cost have you checked out cost of doing this.

Please don't get me wrong I'm not against you breeding, I'm just concerned that you really think it out as it is a big decision. :-\

Ann, I totally get where you are coming from.  I am really just toying with the idea.  I am not sure I could even give them up once they were born...LOL.

Oh my, you went from not knowing if you could make it through puppyhood with mojito to wanting to breed him.  These dogs I tell you, once they find a home in your heart you're bound to do anything.  :)  Let us know what you decide.

No, I'm sure since your friend had puppies you're well aware of what is all involved.

I don't think it would be a bad thing to breed him :) People ask me all the time what breed my dog is and where they can get one. There just aren't enough Shorkies around!

The only thing I would worry about, like someone else said, is getting very Yorkie or very Shih tzu-like puppies. I read an article about a human couple who were both of mixed race (both had white mothers and black fathers) who had twins. One twin was white and one was black...amazing world we live in!  :D

I always make fun (out of love) of Monty because his yorkie and shih-tzu characteristics are so obvious. He's got a LONG wide shih-tzu body with short little yorkie legs. This causes him to sit really funny because it looks like his legs aren't long enough to make him sit up straight. Even when his legs are fully straighened, his long body is all curled up like a snake. He's got a shih-tzu underbite but its hidden by his longer yorkie snout, floppy shih-tzu ears, and a stubby yorkie tail. One of my favorite things about him is his GANGSTER bark. He doesn't yap like a yorkie at all and when he barks (rarely) people always way "did that bark just come out of that little dog?" LOL! Shorkies are the BEST. The mix is perfect. He has a yorkie dad with a shih-tzu mom. Even though i'm sure mating a shorkie with another shorkie would be absolutely adorable, I would be afraid that the offspring would lose out of the wonderful mix of characteristics that I love.

I know what you mean, Christine.  Mo is a result of a shorkie to shorkie breeding and he looks much more yorkie than Shih-tzu, so he must have picked up yorkie genes from both parents.  The only shih-tzu part of him is that his snout is more pushed in and his eyes are slightly buggy.  Mai Tai, on the other hand, who has a shi-tzu dad, and a yorkie mom, has the shih-tzu body and ears, but the yorkie face.  He looks much more Shih-tzu than a good mix of both, so who knows?

Meika takes entirely off the shih tzu mom, she barely show any yorkie in her, only her snout abit..
