To Neuter or not

I know there are so many unwanted pets, but at the same time, I love this "breed" and toy with the idea of breeding them.  What do you think?

I don't mind breeding as long as the owners are responsible and they look out for the well being of their litter. Also it would be nice to see more Shorkies on the West side :)

You are really responsible and all, as said, and I voted for you to breed, but if you bred him with a yorkie or shih tzu then it would be more of a yorkie or a shihtzu. So it would be a better idea for him to just to breed with another shorkie, if you happen to know one. This is such a big surprise, I had no idea that you were considering breeding. How big is Mo now? The pups would be really tiny!!! And do you have an idea of who you would breed him with?
:D I love shorkies, especially T.B. :D

I would love someone to breed more shorkies. My question what breed do you mate with to make a shorkie? I was told (don't know how true) that they couldn't be mated to each other due to genetics and it could cause problems, also on shorkie site a shorkie should really have the father as a yorkie and mom a shitzu, did anyone ever read this? When researching the purchase of my second, I did notice what the parents were and have to say the pups looked different when not what I thought was the correct mix.  Also my Ozzy will be getting neutered in about 2 weeks. good Luck.

You have to mate a Shih tzu and a yorkie to get a shorkie.  The people who say they made up the breed say the mom has to be the Shih tzu and the dad, the yorkie.  I imagine this is easier because Shih tzu's are usually bigger and you don't want a tiny yorkie pregnant with big puppies.  That being said, Mai Tai was an accidental baby and his mom was a tiny yorkie while his dad was a 15 lbs Shih-tzu.  My friend was very worried about the yorkie, but she gave birth to three healty pups.  Mojito on the other hand is the result of a shorkie to shorkie mating.  He is tiny and adorable and looks very similar to Mai Tai only much smaller.  I think when you breed shorkie to shorkie, you lose some hybrid vigor and also have more of a chance of getting a pup that is more of one breed than another because the way the genes recombine.  Anyway, I think they are all shorkies, but can understand the ideas behind the breeders plans of having the mom be a Shih tzu.    I live in NJ and if I mate Mo, I will let all of you know.  Not sure if you would want a pup from his litter as he has an open fontanel.  Vet says this is very very common, and is even considered standard in many chihuahua's.  He is otherwise very healthy now, though he had a very rough start due to his small small size.

yeah i have read that a "true" shorkie is a yorkie dad and shihtzu mom. idk how it would turn out if you were to breed two shorkies because then it wouldn't be a first generation shorkie like i am sure the majority of us here do have.

Well, if you bred a shorkie to a shorkie obviously the puppies would be shorkies, but I think they are called second generation or something. Teddy has a yorkie dad and shih tzu mom, but I think that it doesn't really matter. I don't believe in "true" shorkies. I mean, they still have a yorkie and a shih tzu in them all the same, it's just a bit safer to have a shih tzu mom (because they're larger).
:D I love shorkies, especially T.B. :D

I'm with you Teddy, but the people who claim to have made up the breed are rather rabid about the whole thing.

I believe in both neutering and breeding, if you are unable to look after the lifes you create then i believe you should neuter.  I am planning on breeding meika once because i want another shorkie, and i want one from her.  But after that is completed, i will be getting her spayed asap!!

Travis, where do you live and where do you plan to get the male to father the pups?  If you are near me, maybe we can get them together.  I completely understand if you don't want to though, as Mo is super tiny.  Anyway, it is a thought.
