A tick!!
« on: January 05, 2010, 08:37:38 PM »
So on new years eve as i was petting chewy we discovered a tick!  :o To make a long story short...we thought it was a scab and were trying to pick it off and after using a tweezer we discovered it was a tick.

Now...we live in NYC and it had also snowed that day. Who knows how...but he had one on him. Of course i took him to the vet because it actually bit him...and the vet said to watch out for weird behavior...and to come back to check for lyme disease in a couple of months.  :-\

Im upset because he is on Revolution. I thought that it's supposed to keep my lil guy safe from all of that...right? Apparently...the tick will still bite but then die after? So then what's the point of the expensive medication? Supposedly its supposed to be attached for 48 hourse to transmit any sort if diseases....but how can i know how long it was theer for?

I just get so upset at the thought that anything bad can happen to him.has anyone had any similar experience and can help?

Stacy, both Mai Tai and mojito have had ticks on them, even when it was chilly out, and even though we use Front Line.  My vet says Front Line really only lasts three weeks for ticks, so I re apply then.  Supposedly, it repels them somewhat and kills those that bite.  How big was the tick you took off of Chewy?  Was it a deer tick or a dog tick.  You can tell how long it has been on, approximately, by whether or not it is bloated with blood.  A flat small tick has probably not been on the dog long while a bloated or whitish one has probably been on long enough to transmit disease.  Please don't panic.  Also, don't be surprised if Chewy gets a raised red bump where the tick bit him.  Both Mai Tai and Mojito get that.  It is either an allergic reaction or an infection.  We put an antibiotic ointment on it until it heals.  Good luck and don't freak, even though they are completely disgusting.

Thank you so much for all the info.  :)

Unfortunatly, i panicked and (dont laugh) i flushed whatever it was down the toilet. it was def dead but i wish i would have saved it to show the vet.  :'(

He def has a lil raised bump but the bite seems to be going away.

Im just paranoid now..and i walk him less and when i do i dont let him go on the grass anymore. What sorta life for a dog is this? lol I truly hope he will be ok and that revolution truly is protecting him the way it says it does.

Sorry, never had problems with Teddy about ticks, but don't panic! Do you remember anything about the tick, though, because u still saw it once, right? If not, it's ok! Chewy will be fine.
:D I love shorkies, especially T.B. :D

I've heard that Advantage Multi is really good. That is what I use for Max and so far no problems. Hope Chewy is doing better  :)

Is revolution one that you can buy in Pet stores or one you get at the vet?  I know some of the ones in pet stores are not as effective, but I think they all have problems.  I hate using a pesticide on the dog but don't want fleas or ticks either.

So glad I read this post We also live in ny and at my last vet visit he said once we have a frost there would be no need to use the tick meds only if the temps went up but now that you posted I will give Ozzy a treatment anyway. Hope hes feeling better and don't worry.

Gee, I wonder if the tick could have come in on a Christmas tree.  Do you celebrate Christmas?
