Potty training (we are suddenly losing it!)
« on: December 09, 2009, 06:06:27 AM »
Teddy was doing great in potty training until yesterday when he started peeing on my rug! Maybe he did that because it was sleeting outside, but he still had his pee pads! :-\ Then this morning, he poops in the LIVING ROOM! Sometimes the rug, but he hasn't pooped in the living room for a long time, probably since he was a few months old. I thought that by now he would be potty trained at 10 months, but how can I reinforce the positives of potty training to him?  ???
:D I love shorkies, especially T.B. :D

Teddy, I would start giving him treats again if that is what you did in the first place.  I would also restrict his ability to roam in the house until he is reliable again.  It may be an isolated incident.  Mai Tai did that at about 11 months twice and then stopped.

He IS in the kitchen and living room because of the baby gate. And we never stopped giving him treats. Today he went poop on his pee pad right now, so that's good.

Monty has his random slip ups too. There was one day he decided to poop on the rug right in the middle of the living room, then would pee in random places. Usually his pee accidents leave trails of him running to his wee wee pad, so its not like he doesn't know where to go, he just can't hold it. I wouldn't worry unless he makes it a habit.

Now we have no more problems! But if we do again, then I am posting under this topic! Oh, well, shorkies do have small bladders, especially as young pups, so that may be Monty's problem, by the way. ;)

Better than the carpet. We have wooden floor in the kitchen, which is usually where he went.

Ozzy refuses to go potty outside, he was trained on the pee pee pads and took to it in just a few days, my vet doesn't reccomend walking outside when not fully vacinated and he did have a parasite(vet thinks from where he came from or slight chance from dirty water outside he could have drank) so now he loves to go out but will hold it in until we get home, plus it is freezing and we just had 12" snow he wants no part of it, I just hope I can get him trained to go out in my yard ect...

Yeah, winter is the worst time to have to begin with the potty training! Trust me, I open the door to let my shorkie Teddy out and he turns right back around. The funny thing is that he was the one pawing on the door to go potty outside! LOL!

Hello all!!!  I just got a wonderful almost-4-month-old shorkie last week and have named him Raphael.  He is perfect in every way, except he won't go poop anywhere but the floor.  I am going to start taking him out, even though it is winter, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips or reasons why he refuses to go poop on paper!!!  Now it seems he is so mad at me for trying to make him poop off the floor, that he won't even go pee on his pad any more!!!  I know I've only had him a week, but we were making such progress!  What happened?!!  ???

Sincerely,
Krissy-Pulling-Hair-Out

I know that all puppies can be very frustrating, let alone shorkies, but you just have to reward your puppy with something such as treats when they DO go potty where they're supposed to. Winter is the worst time to start potty training, so it might not be so easy. I am in a convenient position, for I have paper trained (mostly) and outdoor trained my shorkie, Teddy, though he is not fully potty trained yet. Look at this second paragraph for my current potty training problem.

Teddy is doing great progress on the potty training, it's just that in the morning (early) after I feed him his breakfast, he always goes poop on the rug. This is starting to frustrate me, for he is 11 months on January 2nd! He didn't just start doing this, he has been doing this. I know that it's early in the morning, and everyone wants to be lazy, it's just I was wondering if anybody else's shorkie starts slipping in potty training in the morning.?

Oh, I just picked random treats to try and he liked the first ones I picked! Maybe you should just pick what you think looks good for him.
