Ear Infections Revisited
« on: November 16, 2009, 10:22:32 AM »
Hi All,

I just noticed today that one of Mai Tai's ears is much redder than the other on the inside and he has been rubbing at the sides of his face more lately.  Is this an ear infection and are there any home remedies?  I am calling the vet but want to help him now.  I know one of you out there has an answer.

Thanks,
Karen

I would try cleaning his ears daily with peroxide. It will smell a bit but it does help.

Thanks all.  That is exactly how Mai Tai is too, Bren.  I cleaned his ears today with a gentle ear wash and it looked a little less red tonight.  Vet says to bring him in if it is not better in two days.  I noticed that is the ear that Mojito is always grabbing and hanging off of, so I wonder if it is getting irritated.

Hi Karen
Hope Mai Tai is still ok. My suggestion would of been cold tea but it sounds like you have in control. You might have to give Mojito something else to hang off of Lol  :D

So I think Max may have an ear infection but not quite sure. I've noticed that he does scratch his ears a bit so I had to put an e-collar on him. His ear doesn't appear to be red or anything but just wanted to be safe. His appt to see the vet isn't until December 1st. I've read that giving them a tsp. of apple cider vinegar twice a week helps. Anyone ever try this?

No Kim, but one of the ingredients in the earwash I use for Mai Tai is Apple Cider.

Thanks guys. I've been adding a tsp. of the vinegar into his food everyday. It took him awhile to actually eat it. I think the smell threw him off a bit. But he likes it now. I was going to try and put it into his water but he doesn't drink a cup of water a day. Hopefully this will help with his irritation. I think they also say to put a tiny drop into their ears after bathing but I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that. Unless someone here has actually tried it. Last thing I want is for him to get worse.

Yeah, sometimes Teddy won't take his medicine that I have to give him from the vet (when he had diarrea) just because the smell irritated him a bet. I eventually just made him eat it, once we had to give him this butterscotch medicine and he just licked the syringe for more of it he loved it so much!

My Avamae was doing the same thing with her right ear and found out she had ear mites. The vet gave her medicine for it and I put it in now every week. She actually likes it too. Do not know where she got them from since she does not go outside only for a ride in her stroller.

Welcome to the site.  How old is Avamae?  Do you have other pets, she may have gotten the mites from them or she may have come from the breeder with them.  Hope she is fine now.
