Blood in stools
« on: October 15, 2009, 06:34:50 AM »
Mojito is going back to the vet today because, despite being on a diet of chicken and rice only, he has started to pass a lot of blood and mucous again since two days ago.  Don't know what it could be, but the poor thing has not been a healthy dog since he was born.  Hope it is nothing serious.  Don't know what to do with this little guy sometimes.

Thanks Kim.  The vet is testing for Giardia, as he has already tested negative for Coccidia, and all the other parasites.  The bleeding could also be from colitis.  He put Mojito on Metronidazole, and antibiotic that will help both for collitis and giardia, so I hope we see some improvement soon.  He still weighs only 3 lbs at 21 weeks old.

Thanks Bren, he seems a little better today.  He ate all of his meals and he pooped only once with no blood in it at all.  He has done that before though, only to go back to passing blood and mucous again, so I am waiting before I say he is all better.

Good luck with Mojito! Teddy had coccidia when he was a small pup. When we went to the vet for his first shots, they just said he had it, but he was fine with some medicine. I'm sure he will be all better soon. Good luck!

Thanks Teddy.  He continues to improve so I am hopeful this will be the end of the bloody poop show we have had going on here for weeks.

Thanks Ann.  We got the results today, and Mojito does have Giardia, so the meds he is on should cure him of it.  I am glad it is giardia and not chronic bowel problems.  The vet is treating Mai Tai too in case he picked it up also.  It is very contagious if your dogs are little poop eaters which mine are sometimes.  Mo seems much much better now.  Thanks everyone for all your concern.

Well, it's good that they are treating Mai tai just to be safe, because it is most likely that he could've picked it up too. Well, I'm glad that Mojito's getting better, and all of us here were naturally concerned. No need to thank us for it. Well, good luck with Mojito and Mai tai!

That's too bad, but yet so good to finally have an answer I'm sure!  I hope little Mojito is done having problems for awhile.  :)

Best wishes to you and Mojito. At least you did find out that it is a treatable problem.

so glad Mojito is feeling better....and the Giardia is being treated...Bailey had that as well it took 3 rounds of different types of medicine to clear it out of her system...but she never showed any signs of having it....it just showed up at her first vet visit...hopefully Mojito will only need one round of medicine.....it took so long to get it out of Bailey's system since our vet said they had to wait 3-4 weeks to test again for it once she was done with the medicine..

Wow, poor Bailey.  I hope Mojito is done with it.  He has had no blood since he started the medicine.  I know when I had it, one round of the medicine took care of it, but boy was I ever sick with that stupid bug.  Now I am triply careful about washing my hands.  They are getting dried out!
