Help with using a pee pee pad after being trained to go outside
« on: September 29, 2009, 03:57:32 PM »
Okay guys really need some advice/help here...Bailey has been trained to go outside to do her business...she's great and hasen't had an accident when we are home in months or if we only leave her for a few hours...but now that my daughter started college classes there is one day where she is alone from 6-8 hrs..ugh...sometimes she can hold it but other days she can't.....I want to leave a pee pee pad down so she can go but have no idea how to get her to go on it while we are out since if we are home she'll go to the door.......we keep her gated in the kitchen when we are gone...leaving her in a crate didn't help...she just got the poop all over her paws....poor puppy......appreciate any tips/advice...

The pee pads are supposed to have a scent that attracts them to it already. There are also products that you spray on the pads to entice them even more. There are also wee wee pad products that resemble grass if your pup is used to going outside and peeing on the grass.

I gave Monty an indoor pad to use when we can't get him out of the door fast enough (he has a bladder infection) and he randomly finds it to go on it without any training. Granted, sometimes his front feet are on it and he totally misses it, maybe putting 3 or 4 down for Bailey will make her aim a little better.

Sorry Bailey, it might be easier to face the cold! Teddy was trained to do both go on pee pee pads and go outside so I have no problems! This will be so simple for me in the winter. Bailey, I sincerely think that you should face the cold or listen to Christine.

Bailey,  I am having similar issues.  Mojito is having lots of accidents because my girls have been sick and I cannot get him out every hour.  I also know he will never be able to take the cold of winter, so I bought some pee pee pads and a holder so he wouldn't drag the pad into his crate.  I tried to get him to pee on it tonight.  Every time I put him on it, he curled up to go to sleep.  He thinks it is a bed!  After an hour, I gave up and took him outside where he peed as soon as his little feet hit the grass.  Not really sure what to do at this point.  I don't want to confuse him but would love for him to use the pads because his bladder is so small he cannot hold it long, or he just doesn't get the idea, not sure which.  He will pee outside all the time, but won't hold it inside.

hi teddy...sorry for the confusing post...the problem i have isn't taking bailey out in the cold...she's 7 1/2 lbs so i'm sure she will be fine and i don't have any problem taking her out...

the problem i have is that on mondays i work all day and my daughter has 5 college classes....so bailey has to be left alone for 6-8 hrs during the day..and sometimes she can hold it..but most days she can't so i'd like to leave a pee pee pad down for her to go on...but since i'd only be leaving it down when we are gone on mondays i'm trying to see if anyone has any advice on how to let her know that's where she should go to do her business

hi mai tai....i bought a pee pee pad holder in petco yesterday...but i don't want to put it out when we are home......sounds like it's going to take some time for her to know what to do with it...since mojito thought it was a bed...too funny...your right it would be easier for mojito with his small size to use the pee pee pad since we're going to start getting the colder weather here....with bailey since she's big i'm sure she will be fine going outside...i've just got to figure out what to put on her since she does have the fine yorkie hair not the shih tzu hair like mai tai

I bought my holder in petco yesterday too.  I also bought an adorable sweater for Mojito, but he hates it.  He ran right into his crate like he was embarrassed or something...LOL.  Winter should be fun.  He peed on the kitchen floor this morning ten minutes after I had him outside.  AAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm still looking for a job so am thinking of having to do this at some point to, please keep us posted on how both Bailey and Mojito do with this as I too think it may be difficult and possibly confusing.  I hope this is not the case.

Is there a possibility that you can put the pee pad by the door that you use when taking him out.  That might be the best bet.
If not, here is something that might interest you

http://cgi.ebay.com/Blue-Plaid-Pet-Tent-Exercise-Pen-Playpen-Dog-Cat-Crate_W0QQitemZ250505363240QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a53487f28&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I have 2 of these.  I sent one to my son in Florida for when I go visit with him so Jemma has somewhere to sleep and I know she is safe.  They also come larger than this one.  The top has a screen which zips closed so they can't jump out.  It also has 2 side zip doors that you can open so the dog can go in or out. Or you can keep them zipped closed.  I like them better than a crate. I think crate training is the way to go, but I like this because they can also sleep in it at night instead of a crate.
I love it, weighs only about 3 pounds total.  So easy to fold.  And has a carry case if you want to bring it somewhere with you.  Hotel/motel, anywhere. It has a attached vinyl floor that washes easily.
When Jemma was younger I put a pee pad in there, her little bed and toys.  And her food and water. But the food and water sit in this holder.  It came that way.  I was afraid she might play with the water or tip it over.  I had no problems at all with this.  And like I said, I LOVE it!!

I am ready to throw these pee pee pads out the window and return the pad holder for my money.  Mojito is easily able to pull the pads out from the holder, shred them and eat them.  Today I spent a full hour on the kitchen floor knowing he had to pee because he had just woken up from a 2 hr. nap, and I kept putting him on the pad.  He kept running off of it and going into his crate.  Every time he came out, I put him back on the pad, and sweetly said, "Go Potty," but he would not do it.  Finally, he ran toward his crate, and stopped to pee on the floor.  I quickly grabbed him up, put him on the pad and said, "Go Potty," but he would not do anymore. I guess he did it all on the floor.  A few hours later, we went through the whole process again with the same result.  I have HAD it.  Don't know what to do now.

Oh, I get it Bailey. Well, I don't know what to tell you. You are going to have to lay down the law and make sure she knows that using pee pee pads are what she is supposed to be doing. But I don't know how to do that, so sorry Bailey! Good luck!
