House Training
« on: December 02, 2009, 07:39:02 PM »
Max is 4 months old he has done really good with house training for three weeks all of a sudden he decides to poop in the house everytime, he does however still ring the bell to go outside when he has to pee, he used to ring the bell to go outside to poop also but has all of a sudden stopped doing that, any siggestions would be great.

Unfortunately, dogs do sometimes have their off days. In a case like yours you would have to go back to the basics. Give him a treat and praise him when he goes potty the right way. Because Max is still young, any dog trainer will tell you, you have to consistently re-enforce their training. If you slack off they will just do whatever they please.

I am with Kim on this one.  Mai Tai did the same thing at about 5 or 6 months old with both poop and pee.  We just had to start back from the beginning again and it only took about 2 days to get him back on track.  He never did it again after that, at least not consistently.  He has not had an accident now in months.  Also, maybe put his poop outside where you want him to go so he gets the idea again.

Sometimes dogs just aren't on their A-game some days, so I agree with Kim and Mai tai. You just have to reinstate what you have been working on in potty training.
:D I love shorkies, especially T.B. :D

Thank you all for the information I have been re training Max & it seems to be working.  One more question now it seems Max will not go poop all day and when we get up in the mornings his kennel has poop all over it, this has been going on for about a week now any suggestions on this would be great.  Thanks again!

Is his kennel small enough that he cannot get away from the poop once he does it?  If the kennel is big enough for him to poop in it and then get away to an opposite end to sleep, it is too big.  You must somehow partition it off so it is only big enough for him to turn around in.  I know this is a pain as you may end up with a pup full of poop, but they really don't like to poop where they sleep, so it is supposed to prevent the pooping.  This is not foolproof though, as I found out with Mai Tai who would poop in the crate anyway.  We made sure to bring him out at 11 pm before we went to bed to make him poop so he would not go at night.  Now I know this can be hard as I have been standing out in the cold and rain some nights for a half hour or so before he would go, but he eventually got the idea as long as we gave him lots of praise and treats for going outside.  Also, how late do you give  him his last meal?  If it is too late, he may have to poop in the middle of the night.  We give Mai Tai his last meal at 5:30, and take up his water at 7.  Mo must eat later, around 9 because he is too small and needs to eat more frequently, so he sometimes wakes me up int he middle of the night to go out.  Good luck and let us know how you make out.  This too shall pass.

Is he on medication? Sometimes that really messes with their digestion and makes them constipated or gives them diarrhea. At 4 months they should be going to the bathroom pretty rapidly after eating. Monty usually waits about an hour after eating a meal. Sometimes he'll skip pooing after dinner so we will take him for a quick run around the block before midnight. Running ALWAYS makes him poop.

We do have his kennel blocked off so he can just basically turn around in it, he has not had medication for about two weeks now the vet did tell me to try a different dog feed so I started that yesterday.  The pooping in his kennel started after he had his 12 week booster shots about a month ago, I am lost and do not know what else to try.

Hello all,
Max did not poop in his kennel last night which was great I have a feeling it was probably his puppy food which we were feeding Eukanuba and now we are feeding Top Choice which comes from the vet, he seems to eat more now and it also got rid of the diarrehea, still crossing my fingers but I think were headed in the right direction, thanks for all the advice again, I now have the picture of Max on my camara just have to figure out how to download it on here now.

Welcome Jazz. It is never too early to start training your dog. Actually the sooner the better. They are like kids, they are able to learn a lot better and a lot quicker when they are young. As for giving her a bath, well that is up to you really. For the most part I give Max a bath once every 2 weeks. Unless we take him to the dog park then he gets a bath right when we get home  :)

If you have any specific questions just ask. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum.
