Diarrhea and food
« on: November 21, 2009, 10:54:29 AM »
Kimchee has had diarrhea for the last 4 days.  I took her to the vet today and they gave her some antibiotics and recommended a bland diet.  I bought her some Science Diet food they recommended but I am worried about having her eating regular food again.  I know there are tons of different recommendations for food-the vet said Iams or Science Diet.  Of course that is what they sell.  I was wondering what some of your recommendations were for dogs with a sensitive tummy.

Kimchee, Mo had bloody diarrhea for weeks and the only thing that helped was boiled chicken and rice.  His poop became solid and he only went twice a day, though it still had blood in it.  Then we found out he had giardia and treated him.  The bleeding stopped.  I still have him on boiled rice and chicken as I don't know what to put him on either.  Mai Tai is now on Science Diet, but I have heard not such good things about it.  There are posts on here with links to pages where they rate the food for dogs, so take a look at that.  It is just that my petsmart doesn't sell a lot of the better foods listed.  It hardly costs me anything to feed Mo chicken and rice, and he is doing so well on it, I just may keep it up.  I have to ask the vet if he needs any vitamin supplements though.

Oh poor Kimchee...home she is feeling better soon....Bailey has been on Solid Gold's puppy food and..."knock on wood" has been fine...I think it's rated pretty well in those dog food ratings....

For Max, we mix his food with Candiane and Blue Buffalo. We have also given him a mix of Eukanuba and Avoderm. We try to give him food that doesn't contain soy, wheat, and corn as it can cause allergies. I think organic foods are the best for dogs.

Kimchee max had the same problem about 2 weeks ago and the vet gave him some meds also and he was back on dry food in two days and has had no problems, we feed Eukaneba.

We feed Monty a brand called Health Extension. Its a little hard to find in some areas. My vet is all about hollistic health and Health Extension is really good as far as being "all natural".

So unfortunately Max has contracted diarrhea. The first day he had it was last Thursday. He also vomited 3 times that day but hasn't since. His behavior is normal and I've taken his temperature and he doesn't have any fever. At first I thought it maybe the treats so I stopped giving him any and he still has diarrhea. Then I figured it maybe his food so I changed it and still nothing has changed. On Saturday his poop seemed almost normal still a bit soft but at least it wasn't a big blob, but then by night time it was diarrhea again.

I've heard that it's best to give them probiotics but not sure which kind and if I really should. Has anyone ever tried probiotics?

Any home remedy suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks for the help!

I would put him on a diet of rice and chicken until the diarrhea passes.  A change in dog foods might just make it worse.  Not sure about which probiotics to use.  I hope he feels better soon.

Thank you Karen.

I'm going to try giving him rice with boiled chicken today. Also do you think using sweet potato instead of the pureed pumpkin will help? I tried giving him pepto bismol today but the moment he smelled it he ran..haha. So now I'm gonna try giving him a little sweet potato in his meal. Any thoughts on how much I should feed him?

I would try just a few small meals throughout the day instead of one big one so as to avoid overwhelming his digestive system.  I don't know about the sweet potato though.  My vet said that pumpkin is good for diarrhea.  Never heard anything about sweet potato.  Let us know how he does.  And be careful about the rice once the diarrhea passes, as I have gone on to constipate my puppy with too much on accident.

I figured sweet potatoes were good since they have potassium and more fiber then pumpkin.
