Constipated (maybe)
« on: September 24, 2009, 03:26:20 PM »
We think that Teddy might be constipated. IT was one of the possibilities if we gave him to much of this medicine, but he only had it 3 times. I really don't want to go to the vet again, so is there anything that I can give him so that he will start going potty again?

olive oil. The vet told me to give him 1.4 tsp of olive oil after his meal or some canned pumpkin pie.

I am positive of the olive oil and the canned pumpkin but I don't know if it's canned pumpkin pie or pumpkin and I am not sure of the amount. With the olive oil it is 1/4 tsp. You can put it right on a spoon and they'll lick it up. Give it to him after he is finished eating.

Hi Guys, it is canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie.  It is the pumpkin filling you would put in the pie before you bake it.  It comes in a can for those of us who hate pulling the slimy stuff out of the pumpkin itself.  I think pumpkin pie might cause upset, with all the fat and buttẻr.

Yeah, I'm going with the olive oil because we don't want him having diarrea AGAIN just in case! Thanks for all your help so far!

The canned pumpkin for pie is not what you use.  It is pure pumpkin in a can.  Regular canned pumpkin for pie is sometimes flavored with sugar and other things.  It's just called pure pumpkin. If a dog is pooping too much, they say give it pumpkin.  If the dog isn't going, also give him canned pumpkin.  Go figure right?  lol.  But it does work, I've used it and they LOVE it!!!

oops, my bad.  I had no idea they had canned pumpkin separate from the kind you use in a pie.  I make pumpkin pie every year, so this is a surprise to me.

Yeah, I'm afraid that Teddy may have diarrea if I give him olive oil and then we would give him the medicine and he would get constipated again! So we went to the store to get canned pumpkin and they were all out of it. The whole entire bottom shelf of canned pumpkin products was out! All of it, the whole entire shelf! Go figure, right?

How old is Teddy? I complained to my vet that Monty is not pooping after EVERY meal and actually wait a couple hours after a meal to poop if he does at all. I thought it was constipation but the Vet said that that's actually good news because pooping too soon after a meal may indicate parasites, and the ability to hold in the poop and not go all the time is normally seen in older dogs. The fact that a puppy is able to do so is actually good news.

He pooped A TON on his pad this morning when I wasn't looking! He must've been holding it in the whole time. Now, this is absolutely fantastic news, the best I have heard lately. I won't need any more help for now, but thanks everybody! Teddy is 7 1/2 months, he will be 8 months old on October second.
