My AvaMae had the same problem and when I spoke to her Vet he tested her ears to find she had ear mites. She now has medicine that I put in her ears once a week and no more smelly problems.

I've heard of smelly ears, if your shorkie's ears smells make sure you are getting their ear hairs plucked!
