Smelly Dog
« on: September 22, 2009, 07:30:54 PM »
Does anyone else have a smelly dog?  I give Cash a bath about every 2 weeks, but he stinks after a couple of days.  It's kind of like fish??  I'm not sure if this is just the kind of dog he is as I've heard that non shedding dogs tend to have more of an oder than dogs who shed OR if it's from all his playing and rolling around in the wet grass he does with my dog and the neighbors dog.  Not to mention all of their dog spit on him.
Also he has the same stinky fish smelling breath....I get him the bones that are supposed to be good for his teeth and for freshening his breath.  I notice that sometimes helps for about 1/2 day, then he's stinky again.  He also likes to clean the inside of my dog and the neighbor dogs mouth and ears.  So I'm not sure if that's partly to do with his bad breath either.
So what do you think, is it him or all these other dogs doing it to him?  :)  And what do you suppose I should do about it???  -thanks.

Cash, both Mai Tai and Mojito are smelly about 2 days after a bath.  Their breath is not the best either.  I always assumed they were smelly because we spend so much time outdoors.  I have seen sprays you can put on them between baths to make them smell better, but never bought them because I was afraid they would irritate them.  I will take any ideas anyone has too.

Bailey hasn't had a smell...but it does not sound like she is out as much as mai tai mojito and cash.....since my youngest is 18...she's not out in the yard playing with kids..she's only out for walks and to do her business.....

Ozzy gets kinda stinky after a couple days post bath.  I wouldn't say he smells like fish though.  Just more of a dirty smell.. not "fresh".   :P

What kind of food are you feeding him?  Is it fish based?  The food we give Oz is poultry based.  Maybe that affects something????  ???

I think Ozzy's smell is from being wet and also when he licks himself alot.  Sometimes he kinda smells like spit... ew.  I've also noticed a stink when his ears are dirty.   :-[

I would google this issue and see what comes up... it's amazing the information you can find online!  :)

Do you use baby wipes in between baths?

i do have wipes but i don't like the way they work/smell.  though i forgot that i did buy some grooming/finishing spray that smells like tangerine melon.  i just sprayed some on him as he just came back in from playing and he stunk.. it seems to have worked.  not sure if my little guy likes to smell like sweet fruit, but i love it!  :)

I don't use baby wipes on him  Let me know if that spray irritates Cash or not.  If not, I may try it too.

I will let you know, though I don't foresee there being a problem with his skin.  It's just a couple squirts of such a fine mist that I'd be surprised if it did any harm???  Anything is possible with these little guys though. :)

You've probably already ruled it out, but check the toys he's playing with. I kept wondering why Monty smelled bad and realized it was him rolling around with his bully stix. That's probably not your problem, but just putting it out there.

the fish smelly usually means one thing... your pup's anal glands need to be expressed. usually the groomer or the vet can take care of it... for a price  :D

You think?  It's more in his fur, and he's not scooting at all.  He smells 10 times worse after being outside playing. I think I've ruled that it's dog spit and earth.  :)

then maybe it's not... reading things on the internet typically seem to say that a fishy smell does indicate the anal glands need to be expressed. but, in your case maybe it's not so. who knows... just a suggestion. roxy needed her's done and wasn't scooting either.

For Max, we use the spray maybe a few times. It doesn't seem to irritate him or anything. We also use the wipes everytime before he enters the house. Max likes to "spread" grass and dirt around everytime he potty and even when it isn't his. So all that stuff really makes their paws stink. He also likes to roll around in his food before eating it. Don't worry it's the kibble kind. So we always give him a quick wipe after he finishes eating.

He still kinda smells but it isn't that bad. I hear people tell me that puppies tend to loose that smell as the grow older.

When that happened to Kingston, it was his ears. I didn't know he he needed to get his hair plucked, but usually that fishy smell is the beginning of an ear infection. I clean his ears once a week now.
