Peeing TOO much
« on: September 19, 2009, 06:33:54 PM »
Taking everybody's advice, I increased the amount I walk him to avoid accidents and help him understand where he's supposed to go. I am worried though because no matter how often I take him out, he ALWAYS pees. If I take him every hour, half an hour, 15 minutes, or 10 minutes, he will ALWAYS pee. Is there a medical condition associated with this? He's not just sprinkling to make me stop saying "hurry up", he pees a fairly decent amount every time.

I know males love to mark their territory and Mai Tai can pee every few minutes on a 2 mile walk, so I am not sure if it is a problem you are having or if it is normal.  Mai Tai will hold it in the house for about 5 hours, but I could take hiim out every hour and he would pee a few times.  If it is too much pee it could be a UTI or something, or even diabetes.  Does he drink a lot of water?  I think he is too young for diabetes, but I am not sure.  I think he is just being a boy dog and peeing because he can.  If you are worried though, ask your vet, whom you have on speed-dial anyway, I am sure.  I know I did.  Good luck.

used to have this problem with my baby, too. turned out she had a UTI... so you should definitely talk to your vet if the problem does not seem to get better. i mean roxy's progressed to the point in which she was peeing blood... very scary, and wish i had caught it sooner.

Agree with Bren, could be a UTI, that is one of the symptoms, frequent urination.  Best to get a vet check just to be safe.

I agree with Brenlynn and and Shorkiejem, a UTI seems to be what it is. But I am not really sure because this has not happened to us before. When they are younger they have a smaller bladder so they have to go more, but if it is that frequent then I agree with Brenlynn and Shorkiejem about the UTI situation. Good luck with whatever you do, though, Christine3837. I'll just call you Christine.

Yep that's my name so Christine alone is just fine. I have a vet appt for Friday when Monty will also get his final shots. YAY! I hope he's not in pain. I thought UTI was more common in female dogs. Poor puppy. Today was the first day he pooped after breakfast AND lunch. The puppy store said that him being constipated was also a sign of UTI.

Poor Monty. You must be so depressed. Well, the uti seems likely and I hate to say it. I hope that it is just a possibilty that will be passed up. Good luck with the vet appointment and I hope that you will solve something, Christine. Oh, and I like the new pic of Monty! He is so darn cute! :D

Aw! Thank you teddybear. He does look so innocent in that picture. Don't let him fool you lol! This is the first time in my life that I am responsible for a life and I am freaking out. They said that if it is possibly UTI, he can wait until Friday with no problem so I feel a little better than I did before.

How does a puppy get UTI? Did I do something wrong? Is there something natural that can be done to prevent it?

Monty seems to have taken to his potty training well and knows to go to the balcony door when he needs to go. Unfortunately, will LEAP off from high places and come crashing down in order to do so, so I think there definitely is a problem with him being able to hold it in. Between 7 and 8pm he ran to the door to pee about 5 times. I will keep everybody updated on what the vet says on Friday and share any helpful information he gives me on avoiding this.

Now that does sound like a UTI Christine.  I think they are more common in females.  The only thing I see under how to prevent them is to make sure your dog has plenty of water to drink at all times (I am sure you are doing that already), and to make sure they are clean so that bacteria does not have a great opportunity to travel up the urethra.  Let us know how you do.  Hope all is well.

it is more common in females, but it doesn't mean it can't happen in males. the reccomendation they gave me to try and prevent it in the future is just to make sure they stay well groomed "down there"... hair short and cleaned often. you didn't do anything wrong, sometimes these things just happen.

Ok, so the vet said that the big indication IS peeing too much but accompanying that would be dribbling. If he is leaving drops after he pees or randomly, that is means UTI. I explained that Monty is just leaving a giant puddle of practically CLEAR pee every 10 - 15 minutes and he told me to just limit his water intake. Simply provide water every few hours and that should take care of that.

I also explained that the puppy store told me to allow him to have as much water as he wants because his constipation may be attributed to dehydration. The vet disagreed and told me limiting his water is fine to do and to give him 1/4 tsp of olive oil, or a bit of canned pumpkin (pie?) after his meal to make him poop.

I still have a vet appt this Friday but so far it sounds like he is just drinking copious amounts of water out of boredom since I still can't take him outside to run and running in circles on my balcony makes me dizzy. Friday is going to be a momentous occasion when I can rule out a medical condition, and take the little guy out to parks!

Well that's good news, and yes it'll be much easier on you when the two of you can go out and about.
