Lightning up? Also, male or female?
« on: July 20, 2008, 02:59:09 AM »
hello everyone!
I am considering getting a shorkie.  This pic is of 3 pups 1 week old; 1 female, 2 males.
Will they lighten up?  Mom is a 5lbs shih tzu (white with beige), dad is a 3 lbs yorkie.

Also, which sex is better, male or female?  Im looking for a lap dog.

I like the looks of the shorkie in the this pic.

Thanks...

Hi welcome to shorkie talk. If you look at the pictures at the top of the screen that's my Toby. He was like those puppies very dark but as you can see he lightend up as he got older. My personal opinion is that it doesn't matter they are both good female or male its just how you treat them. However the general consensis is female. They are great lap dogs and if you read what everyone says, they are easy to train. This is my personal opinion. I hope that helps.

Well for some getting the opposite sexed dog is best. I had always found that was best for me. I had  a hysterectomy in Feb, and then for the first time, I truly truly bonded with a female dog (Cherokee). I have always had male horses, dogs, etc. I bonded best with males. I followed the old guide on the opposite was best. It really depends  on the person. This works best usually because we are integrating ourselves into the pack....and the dog is going to ses us as part of that pack.....and we are best as the opposite sex...With plenty of nuture and love and positive reinforcement you will be able to have a lapdog out of either sex. :-) My 60 lb male Australian Cattle Dog is a lap dog. I have a HUGE chair and a half to accomidate my dogs....(I have 2 LOL) and they both pile in with me if I sit and often wait for me.....so i always have 71lbs of dog in there....Cherokee (Shorkie)  and Duke (the Aussie Cattle Dog) I am lucky if I get my corner...I am only 6' tall!!

If you already have an exsisting dog, it is best to always introduce an opposite sexed dog into the pack.....two same sexed animals will compete and there will be more aggression and fights.

i'm not sure about the gender, however i have a female and i have found her to be juss A-dorable, and both my boyfriend and i love her.  However i have a feeling she loves him more than me :(, but i think that this is due to the fact that he feeds her.

As for being good lap dogs, my sadie is hyper!  but this is not very often.  At most maybe once every two/three days.  This is however due to the fact that we live in an apt and we don't always have the time to walk her.  Furthermore, she is still a puppy and our vet has told us that this will change once she is spayed.

At the same time, sadie LOOOVVEESSS belly rubs and she will literally lay there for hours just for a belly rub.  and when you stop she kicks her front paws up in the air asking for more.

We have a male shorkie that was similarly colored to the puppies above.  He has lightened up a lot.  He just had his first haircut and that removed almost all of the black he had left.  He is now mostly tan with a bit of black and grey.

I don't know about female shorkies, but our Jack is a great lap dog.  He will sit in my lap while I watch tv and loves any kind of attention.  We do also have a chocolate lab, so those two play with each other most of the time.  They are both males, but we haven't had too much jockeying for position between the two.  They get along quite well actually.

Good luck with your decision!

My shorkie "Christie" is a year old and is still basically black with some brown.  She's all of 5 pounds and even though she was supposed to be my dog, she loves my husband and follows him everywhere.  She'll sit on his lap when he's in his chair but sits by my side when I'm on the sofa.  VERY AFFECTIONATE.  All our previous dogs were labs and female so I don't know about having a male dog. And yes, she loves to have her tummy rubbed. She also likes to fetch anything -- ball, sticks, toys too big for her mouth. One thing I've learned for sure is that you'll love your shorkie.

KC it is not one of those things where 100% of the time two member of the same sex will jockey for attention or get riled up and have aggression issues. However, there is a MUCH MUCH MUCH higher risk when you have two of the same sex. I have been called to many homes to help them bring peace back to their lives (I am a trainer) when they have two of the same sex and it can be done, but it is much easier from the get go most of the time if they are opposite sex........Rarely are there problems, or are the problems as great with dogs of the opposite sex........
Again nothing in life is 100%!
Just as it is not guaranteed one is going bond better with a dog of the opposite sex, it just seems that is what happens......and studies confirm it.
It shows also from the posts that followed my statement that is how the famlies have been...meanwhile....our family is the exception to that rule. Cherokee is much more bonded to me than my husband. My husband has not taken a pack leader role. The dogs will not walk politely with him on a leash....will not allow him to exit through a door first. (We are fixing this now, and teaching my husband how to be a pack leader he thought he had to be a brute to train, or be a leader and was fearful he did not want to hurt animals and I am showing him you teach through positive reinforcement and through their communication and dog talk....). Since they know that the pack leader exits first, you exit first and make them know you own that space by taking it over ....with your body not by force like he THOUGHT, (luckily all he had was cats LOL). Before I came around they were all over the counters and everything else and then when we got married they were smacking my dogs unprovoked, I had to stop all of this (I was scared they would put an eye out or get themselves hurt)!! They only knew "no" to stop until my husband looked away....so I had to teach follow through on "no" which was so hard.....because then I had to teach a little negative reinforcement, so the spray bottle had to come out....broke my heart. I realized what mom always said when I had "time out" this hurts me more than it does you....and I thought "yeah right, you sit here for an hour with out tv, or you miss that dance with all your friends and see who hurts more!!"
Cats are so much more difficult to train than dogs! I am so glad that is done and over with....other than the one that now has learned to exit through the doggie door, she is learning that is not acceptable.

Hi Steffy,

I have seen your website and really enjoyed it.  I would love to read the stories about shorkies but cannot enter that part of the site without a special password.  How can we go about getting one if we want to access the site?  Thanks and I hope we see more of you here.

please feel free to send me any pics for your babies and stories about them.  It is not a chat forum but it is a great way for us to promote the Shorkie breed.
I forgot to mention that most shorkies that are the solid gold... start our almost black..(its actually guard hair) but underneath is the real color and you will see them lighten as they grow.
If any one needs me for anything at all let me know and Ill see if I can help
