Dog Food Info
« on: September 05, 2009, 02:36:32 AM »
I've done a lot of looking into our dog foods on our market today.  Most are crap.  Filled with corn which some dogs can't even digest.  What a filler.
Some of the worse are:

All forms of Purina

All Iams...surprised?  NEVER feed Iams.  Here's why:

http://www.iamscruelty.com/

All Eukanuba are no good.  I'm trying to show the most  selling foods that are crap.  There isn't a dog food in the supermarket that is good.

Now here is the site in which to look for a good dog food.  It tells you the food, contents, and why it is or isn't good.

Hope this helps.   I feed Jemma Canidae.

Also be super careful on how much protein and fat are in the foods.  The 6 star foods are too high in protein and fat for Jemma.  The 5 stars are better for the small breeds.  Our little one can be subject to liver shunts among other things, so we don't want anything too high in content.

This is by alphabetical order.

And this one is the same site but uses the star system rating.

My vet recommended Science Diet but I don't see it on any of these lists.

Science Diet is made by Hill's, so go under H and it's there.  The rating is a no no.

Thanks, I will check it out.  What a shame as my vet recommended it for my puppy when he was so tiny and undernourished.

wow.... i feed roxy pro plan which i figured would be a good dog food, but it only has a 1 star rating. she really doesn't seem to be all that crazy about it, or maybe she just isn't a big eater in general... maybe i will switch when we run out of this and look for a better one.

teddy, pedigree is also a 1 star dog food

Really? Teddy really likes Pedigree puppy food so I am not changing it because of some rating that somebody did. This is what our vet recommended, and this one rescue feeds their dogs science diet, which apparently has a bad rating. So are you guys just gonna screw up your dogs eating habbits because of some rating that a person could've lied on? Maybe their dog just had a hard time with it, which doesn't mean ours does. I may be wrong, though

That's for the info Jem.
Cody's on Imas small breed puppy and even though it only got one start I'll keep him on it. I'm going to take that site with a grain of salt cuz the other food the vet recomended(at $35 a small bag mind you) also had one star. That's just me, but I appreciate the info, and research you did, Thanks!

You don't have to change any dog food that you don't want too.  This review site rates all dog foods, and all brands.  They get nothing from it.  Rather than listen to them, why not learn about nutrition dog food, doing your own research.  If you learn about the ingredients, you'll find most dog foods have lots of fillers and grains like corn, which is a proven fact that it's not good for dogs and has no nutritional value what so ever.
This site is not one person's review but rather a panel.
As far as screwing up your dog's system, that is false.  Never change over a dog from one bag to the next without a gradual change.  You mix 3/4 old food with 1/4 new for 3 to 4 days.  Than 1/2 to 1/2 for 3-4 days, then 3/4 new to 1/4 old for 3-4 days, than 100 percent new food.
Canines are not grain eaters, they are meat eaters.  If your first ingredients in dog food is meat, you can be pretty sure there is enough meat in the food.  Especially if 3-4 are listed in a row.  If the first product is corn or wheat then you are in trouble.
I never asked my vet about dog foods.  They get quirks for every bag they push just like the doctors who give out their sample meds by the big pharm companies.
Please don't tell people not to change their dog food if they are not on a good brand.  I think you looked at that site thinking one person wrote that.  As far as your dog food goes, Pedigree?  The very first ingredient listed is....corn.
BHA and BHT are used in that food.  It's been banned from all human food.  And it has wheat which is one ingredient that is believed dogs have allergies too. And Meat-by-products.  Do you know what that is? I used your example of dog food because that is the one you mentioned.
All I said is to read all of it.  Did you read the ingredients in your food?  You're happy with that?  Then use it.
I only pay 10.00 for my dog food, I believe it is a 5 pound bag and it lasts me awhile.  Jemma doesn't eat a whole lot.  But there has been a major change in her since I changed her food.  No more constant scratching for one thing.  A much softer and shinier coat as well.  That was enough for me.  And you are right when you say a dog doesn't react to foods the same way.  But they still react better with meat than grain.  I look at dog food like I look at my kids food.  Would I feed that to my kids?  Heck no, not feeding it to my dog either.
I researched dog food and wasn't afraid to admit that Jemma was eating crappy stuff.  So I changed, it wasn't a big deal for me.
All I was doing was trying to share, what I thought, was important stuff to know for all fur parents.
Sorry if I offended anyone, it's not what the post was suppose to do.

No info on treats, wish I did though, lol.  I also belong to another site called Yorkietalk.  It has over 50,000 members, but it's really more Yorkies.  Because Jemma is 1/2 Yorkie, it's ok, hahaha.  They have sections on dog foods and I believe some recommendations on treats.
I know some makers of bully sticks are listed there which Jemma loves.  But there is one brand I can't use because it upsets her tummy, sniff

shorkie, I was not at all offended by the info you posted, I found it really interesting.  I was pissed that my vet recommended a food (Science Diet) that has a bad rating.  I naively trusted the food because my vet said it would be good,  I never even read the ingredients (did not have my glasses on at the store).  Believe me, I will be having a chat with the vet on  our next visit.  Mojito has been struggling with blood in his stool, so I am going to wait until that is over before I switch, but I want him on a high quality food.  How is cooking you own food?  I do that for Mai Tai a lot.  I cook whatever we are having, (when it is healthy of course, and not MacDonalds...LOL) and give that to him.  For example, if we are having chicken, I give him boiled chicken with a little rice and some veggies.  I read a lot of different opinions about feeding dogs people food though.

Anyway, I am glad you shared that info.  That is what this site is all about and I am sure we all appreciate it.

Mai Tai if you ever look at rachel ray maganizes she always has a receipe at the back that you and your dogs can eat. You should check one out next time you are standing in line at the grocery store.

Jem-I agree with the first food being meats and the lower on the list corns is best. The only reason I said I was taking it with a grain of salt cuz the other food that the vet recomended was all meats no corn, but it rated it at one, which I though was odd. I still thank you for the site, cuz it does explain a lot about the ingredants that not everyone may know about.
