Halty or head collar
« on: June 26, 2008, 03:48:12 PM »
I'm going to take Toby to obenience classes and they require me to have a choker chain or a  Halty ( head collar). I can't use a choker as Toby has a soft palet problem and it would be dangerous so i have to use a Halty. I have not heard any reports about them. I have gone on the internet and there doesn't seem to be much there either. So I would appricaite your opinons. ???

I have trained dogs using the halty and they are quite effective. I certainly recommend them over choke chains if it is at all possible to use the halty over the choke chain. I only use choke chains as last resort. Best of luck in obedience classes. I am sure all is going to go great.
If it says anything I have used a German Shephard back from pulling without any stress on me or her(the German Shephard). We were both comfortable and pain free. I keep haltys in my kit.
Enjoy....

Thank you for your reply. Could you tell me how you introduced your dogs to the Halty as I'm finding that Toby is pulling it off. He isn't to bad when I take him for a walk. He tries to take it off at first but then I play with him and then he will move along. It 's a stop and start event. I guess it's a persistence game. The only thing is the lady that told me to get it said I should make him ware it for a week but on the packaging it warns not to leave it on. So I'm not sure what to do. I would appreciate your opinon. ???

I would not leave it on. I would only put it on and give affection when he is not behaving adversely. I would show him that he is good for behaving well. He will catch on. They find it binding and it is unnatural to them so they fight it. He will get used to it over time. I assure you with use it will be better.
Good luck....it will get better.
