Thin hair on puppy
« on: August 04, 2009, 02:52:33 PM »
I have a 10 week old Shorkie with very fine hair, and when i bathe her it almost seems like she's got bald streaks along her coat. Did anyone else notice this in their pups, or an overall thinness to their coats? My other dog is a 4 year old shih tzu with a thick double coat and I never noticed thinness to his coat at all so having Roxy with a single coat is tough to get used to in the first place. I guess i'm paranoid that she's developing mange or something since she had ear mites at her 9 week check up, presumably from her littermates.

I should note, Roxy's actually a "backwards" shorkie, her mom was a yorkie and her dad was a shih tzu...but she's still just as cute to me ;)

Also, for those of you who had thin haired pups, are they still fine haired??

Thanks

Mine was a backwards shorkie too, but he has the full coat of a Shih-tzu.  His brother has the thinner coat of the  yorkie and also looked streaky in spots.  Don't know if this is normal or not.  Anyone else?

Teddy has a shih tzu mom and yorkie dad so I am actually the odd ball here! Heh heh. Yeah, I can't help with that but I think shorkies with yorkie moms and shih tzu dads are just as cute! And I can't really help with the thin hair thing because Teddy doesn't have that problem and he's 6 months old anyways. So good luck with your shorkie and welcome to the site!
:D I love shorkies, especially T.B. :D

Hi yeh Toby was from a shorkie Mum and a Yorkie Dad and he did have the same as you and I thought something was wrong with his hair growth too. I was worried that he was going to be bald but once he was about one, may be a bit older his hair started to drop out and he started to grow thcker hair. I actually got a little worried and angry because I was told that these dogs don't loose hair. Any way he is three now and he has plenty of hair and barely looses any. His hair is long and straight but a lot thicker than it was but not as thick as a Shih tzu.
You can see what he looks like as he is the dog on the top of the screen. Those photo's were taken when he was around 2 and I had just had him clipped.

Jemma has a very fine, soft coat.  It is rather straight, but I don't believe it will grow to the length of the floor.  But she is only 9 months old.  Besides I buzzed her.  She is more on the Yorkie side but she has the underbite and short snout of the shitzu.  Because we have 2 breeds in our dogs I try to look at both breeds.  It seems like Shorkies have more medical problems that aire on the yorkie side though.  JMO
If you think your Shorkie has a coat on the Yorkie side, here is a great site that describes the Yorkie hair.
