Nibbles, Nibbles, and even more nibbles!
« on: July 25, 2009, 01:44:57 PM »
Hi everyone! We have Teddy back and he hasn't forget a bit of his potty training. But he is always nibbling and it really hurts with his big grown up teeth and all now!  Does anybody else have this constant biting problem? How do you prevent it? We have been trying to ever since Teddy started nibbling (a day after we go him). I need help please! This nibbling just has to stop immediately!
:D I love shorkies, especially T.B. :D

Bailey is just 5 months and still nibbles now and then.....I'm no expert but what we do is tell her NO- No bite...give kisses.....she stops and then licks us..... or we say no bite and give her a toy to chew on....she still does it sometimes...usually if we are playing with her. and she gets excited....not sure how to stop it immediately...if someone knows i'd love to hear how

Teddy, look under Training Yap on the home page and then click on the Biting subject.  Maybe something in there can help you.  I know the high pitched yelp helped us.  Good Luck, it is a phase they all go through, but they have to be taught not to do it.  It is frustrating too.

I wanted to bump this post up because I'm at my wits end with Roxy's biting. TeddyBear: have you had any luck since this original post? I've tried the yelping, the "no bite" and giving a chew toy all with no avail...it's all a game to her. I think it doesn't help that she play bites/mouths with Rico whenever they play so she feels she can do the same with me. Guess she's still not seeing me as pack leader or something. She's still got her sharp puppy teeth tho and they hurt like crazy and she bites everything, me and my ankles, toes and shoes included!!

I always bop Ollie on the nose to get his attention and tell him no.  He leaves me alone- my husband doesn't do this and Ollie bites him a lot more.

Yes if all else fails then you do have to do something drastic like, giving them a tap on the nose or grab them by the mouth and hold it and growl or say no. They will yelp but it does teach them . Off course make sure you are waring a glove or something that will protect you. They do have to learn that this is not acceptable. Always praise them if when you have stopped them and let go , they lick your hand as this teaches them that that is acceptable.
If they were with their mother and they got a bit rough she would bite them to put them in their place. Another suggestion would be to pick them up and put them in a crate or room on their own and just like a child will learn that if they bite there is a consiquence for their actions.
Hope that helps Good Luck!! ::)

Maybe I should clarify my last statement.  It's not anything drastic, merely a tap to get his attention.  He has never yelped at me while doing this or acted like he was hurt.  It is just enough to stop him from what he's doing.

That's what I do with Teddy but he doesn't stop. So I bought one of those dogs for dummies books or whatever and they said to hold them in a certain way until they start barking to be let go so I tried that and let me tell you that worked out fabulous for me! Teddy knew that he was doing something wrong.

I had this problem when Harley was younger. The vet told me if yelling, making a loud noise or redirection doesn't work to spray him with a squirt bottle with water in it. This works like a charm with Harley for all his chewing and other "bad behaviors". At first I thought it was so mean, but when I say how effective it was, I realized it wasn't going to take long to teach him. Now when he does something (i.e.-steal cell phone case and run around house with it) all I have to do is show him the squirt bottle and he drops it immediately. Maybe this will help some of you.
