shorkie hair cuts
« on: July 22, 2009, 07:00:18 AM »
Hi everyone! I was just wondering, when should Teddy have his first hair cut? I have already had his paws trimmed and his nails cut (they always grow so fast) but I was wondering when to have his first big cut. I don't know what the puppy cut looks like, so does anybody have the puppy cut on their puppy? Tell me if it is good or not. I definitely don't want to do all the extra grooming for him to grow his fur out long like a show dog. . .  . . .    ;)
:D I love shorkies, especially T.B. :D

When Mai Tai's hair was long, we took him once every 5 to 6 weeks to get cut.  Now that it is summer, he is shaved, so we let him go about 8 weeks before he needed it again.  Hopefully, this will carry us through until October.  We did our first grooming at 16 weeks when he was done with all his shots so he would not catch anything at the groomers.

along with this question, do most of your shorkies have a single coat like the yorkie or double coat of the shih tzu? any idea which grows faster?

Mai Tai has a double coat and his hair is really thick.  It seems to grow pretty fast.

Cash has a single coat like a Yorkie.  I give him a trim every 4 weeks or so.

Cody's had one cut so far about 6 weeks ago. We had him shaved cuz it's so hot down here(we're in florida). He really needs to get another trim since his hair is starting to go in his eyes again and his nails need trimming. This time I'm just going to have them clean up his face so it's not in his eyes and his paws so it doesn't look like he's got mops for feet lol! I like the fluffy look.
Truthfully I'm not sure about the coat I'm going to guess both, his head seems to get much more fluffy like a shih tzu and his body is thinner and lay much flatter like a yorkie.

I think it was maybe 7 weeks ago that Teddy had a hair cut (well, more of a trim I should say.) It was nothing big, just a little cut around the paws and he got a bandana afterwards from our groomer. He got his nails clipped and his ear hairs pulled, too. But I was standing right beside him, our groomer was our neighbor. But now, she moved away. Well, at least there is this groomer by Amelia's a couple of minutes away from our house so I think we will go there instead of petsmart because of the distance.

We used the groomers our neighbor uses they have a big van and come to your house. They take him to the van while you wait in the house. It was nice.
There a groomers about a block away so we are going to try them, they seemed really nice.
I'm going to go to petsmart next just cuz I have a coupon for $10 off and puppies are only $15 up to 6months so I figured I might as well get at lest one cheap cut in before I have to pay $45 every few months lol!!

We tried the new groomer today and they were fabulous! It was only $8 for them to pull ear hairs and trim nails, wow!  :o :D And it was really quick, too. The groomer that was on shift turned out to be a person who used to be my neighbor! How funny! ;) Well, now we have a groomer at least, and a cheap reliable one too. We will use them to give Teddy a hair cut when he needs it.

We're going to get Ozzy cut right down.  He's full of mats from being with his previous owner.  We've had him for 3 weeks and the only reason we've waiting this long is because he was neutered week 1.
His appointment is on Saturday and we're going for the puupy cut.  I'm a little nervous because is just such a furry little ball and I don't know how different he's going to look.
I know it' s for his best health to give us a fresh start with grooming and keeping his fur as healthy as possible.

Do you brush EVERY day?

I try to do it everyday. I'd say I forget or don't get the chance to about once or twice a week. If I don't brush him then he looks...raggy, like he needs a bath or something(even if I gave him a bath the night before). Once I brush him then he's more "puffy" looking and his hair looks healthier. Which does anyone else's shorkie seem to have hair like that? I'm going to have to take a picture of before and after.

Mai Tai is the same way Cody.  He looks much neater when he is brushed.  I brush him everyday when his fur is long, and about every other day when he is shaved.  I want him to stay used to it.

Bailey's hair is on the yorkie side..very fine...no double coat...i try to comb her hair everyday.... last week and i had all the puppy...black, white etc hair cut off so her hair is shorter now but all tan...the hair coming in is much softer than her puppy hair
