Bording and neutering
« on: July 21, 2009, 06:34:08 PM »
Hi, I'm new to this as I stated in my first post. I borded Teddy and I feel so bad because he is having his surgery too. It's ok to have his surgery when he's 5 and a half months old, right? And is it bad to bord him when I vacation?  ???
:D I love shorkies, especially T.B. :D

Hi Teddy,

Welcome to the site.  It is fine to have your dog neutered at 5 and a half months.  That is when my dog was neutered and he did very well.  As far as boarding goes, I cannot say, as I am fortunate enough to have someone who will come stay with my dog when I go on vacation in August.  I am worried that Mai Tai will miss us, but he will be with my sister who he knows and loves.  I think, if I had to, I would board my dog to go on vacation, but I would not like doing it.  I have 5 kids though, and cannot refuse them vacations because we have a dog.  I am sure the dog will miss you terribly because you cannot explain where you are going, but as long as you are sure it is a safe and good kennel, I think you will be fine.  I don't think anyone here likes the idea of leaving their dog, but we all must see it is necessary sometimes.  Good luck with your pet and keep posting.

thanks, this helps. He just looked so sad when we left him. I just hope he knows we are coming back.  And we actually gave him to a vet that boards dogs instead of a regular kennel. They take the pups for walks and play with them, so he should be ok.

That is great that you can leave him with your vet.  My vet offers that service too, but has so few spots available you actually have to book a year in advance.  I hope you have a great time, and try not to worry.  Good luck.

Wow? Really?  :o You have to book a year in advance? That would really stink. Thanks for all the help! And I will try to forget about him. We will be home late on Friday and picking him up on Saturday. He had his surgery yesterday and I hope it went well. The vet said they would call us and they haven't yet.  :-\ But I'm sure they will soon.

we are doing the same thing as you in august..bailey will be just shy of 6 months when we go on vacation....most places would not take her since she would not be fixed yet....my sisters vet boards and will do her surgery while we are away...they actually encouraged it since they can monitor her and keep her calm for the week....i'm dreading leaving her but we had this family trip...entire extended family planned well before we got her..and there is no one to leave her with.....next trip we plan to either leave her with family or take her to disney with us and board her there....

Yay! The vet called and all went well.  ;) I am so happy. They had to pull out 1 tooth but it only cost $13. I still don't know if he has to have a cone. . . . .

Well, they did have to pull out 3 teeth, but the other 2 practically fell out when they touched them so they only charged us for the price of one. Whew. I just feel soooo bad for my little shorkie baby.

I don't get the whole pulling out the teeth thing at the vet when they are neutering the dog.  Is it just a way to make money, or is it medically necessary because they are afraid the teeth will fall out and they will choke on them during surgery?  I know when people get operated on, they make sure there is no loose dental work so they have a clear airway.  Mai Tai did not need any teeth pulled when he was neutered.

Well, when we dropped him off the vet looked at him and said it looked like a tooth might not fall out. So they asked if they could pull it if they needed to, and we said yes. I guess that it can cause tooth decay and problems. So there is your answer. My friend had a dog and they took it to the vet to get it neutererd. It was a yorkie and when they took it in, it had shark tooth. I think that's what it was called and that's when your pup has like a double set of teeth. my friend had no idea and they had to get it removed. Be careful that your shorkie doesn't have it. I just thought that I should share that story with you.

I have only had to board one of our dogs once (We used to have an Akita, talk about going from one extreme to the next size wise.:) ) Well she came back in not the best condition, I vowed NEVER to do it again.  I know there must be better kennels out there, but we're very luck now to have plenty of neighbors around who love our dogs like their own so thankfully I don't have to try to find out who those better kennels are.

I didn't mean to make it sound like kenneling was bad, as I said there are plenty of great ones out there I am sure.. this was just my one and only experience years ago.
