Shorkie or Yorkie-Shih?
« on: May 20, 2008, 10:21:44 AM »
Hi everyone!

Let's find out how many of us have what they say is the "true" Shorkie: Shih Tzu mom and Yorkie dad.  My Mattie is what they call an "untrue" Shorkie, or a Yorkie-Shih; her mom was a Yorkie and her dad was a Shih-Tzu.  I've been looking at everyone's pictures here and I think I might be the only one with the "mixed up pup".  All your puppies have very different fur than Mattie's (She has "feathery fur", very strange, but cute! ;D).  I love them all, and of course, they are all unique in their own ways.  I'm interested in knowing what you all have!  Take the poll, friends!    ;)

Mollys mom is shihtzu and her dad is yorkie.  She was the runt of her litter and stayed small like her daddy, 6lbs. :)

my pup sadie... hmm... well, she's not a true "shorkie" either.  i suppose she's a .... hmm... how to put this lightly... a "mutt"??  hehe...

her mommy was a shih-tzu, but her daddy was a yorkie/silky terrier mix.

yup... and to be honest, she looks more like a shih-tzu... she's got a very short snout.

also, she's just under 5lbs right now, but when she's older i expect her to be around 10lbs b'c both her parents were around there.

aaannnyyywayss... either way, shorkie or yorkie-shih, or even shorilky (??),  i don't think it much matters... i wuv my pup and wouldn't care one way or the other what she's called.   ;D ;D ;D

p.s.
that last pic of her was just after a shower.  hehe... she looked like a lil chihuahua...  :P

Sadie is adorable!  I almost got a Silky Terrier before I found Mattie.  Their fur is so unusual and..well..."silky" is the perfect word...I kind of thought Mattie was part Silky, too, because of her fur...but she's got a lot of Yorkie traits.

I love the shower picture!  Mattie looks like a chi after a shower, too!  You're definitely right- it doesn't matter much, how they're mixed, all variations of Shorkie's are awesome!

I'm working on taking some recent pictures of my baby-girl, too!

Well if you go on to some of the other dog sites some of the members there get quiet upset with you if you call your shorkie a breed. Ok they arn't a so called breed but we all love them anyway. They are a mix of breeds but what a mix. I don't know what anyone else thinks but I wouldn't have Toby any other way.

Well, I looked it up, and in fact, dogbreedinfo.com calls these dogs a "hybrid breed", or "mixed breed".  Also, they have several names for this mixed breed.  I understand only a couple hundred dog breeds are considered "breeds" by the AKC, but all dogs orginated from a mix of other dogs.  Anyway, it doesn't matter- Shorkies are the best "hybrid/mixed breed" of all!   :o Take a look at the dog shows- our puppies are waaay better!  We should have a Shorkie-Specific Dog Show!  Hehe!  8)

i think the reason it is most popular for the mother to be shih-tzu and the father to be yorkie because in order for the mother not to have complications with big puppies,   she has to be the bigger one and the father be smaller,  to keep the breed small but still not cause harm to the mother.

Yes I do beleive you are right. It makes alot of sence that they would choose the mother to be the bigger of the two breeds.  ;)

Shorkies!?!?!
« Reply #10 on: June 09, 2008, 07:33:46 AM »
Yeah, before I got my shorkies, I read up about them --- and did a bit of research.  There were a ton of breeders and other sites that referenced "TRUE" shorkies as having a FATHER Yorkie and a MOTHER Shih-Tzu to be considered a shorkie.

I for some reason thought it was the other way around, but found out that the teddy bear faces come from the dad, NOT the mom.  Which makes sense, because Yorkies have long snouts in comparision to Shih-Tzus that have the box like faces and smaller snouts.  I guess the breeds get more and more diluted as you go down the generations, and lose most of their key features as this type of breeding occurs.

Eitherway, I don't think it really matters as long as YOU love your puppy.  Mixed breeds of all sorts are adorable, whether it be a puggle, labradoodle, yorkiepooh or a shorkie.

I Totally agree to all of them and more. I beleive that you could find the hardest personality and give them one of these dogs and they would become putty in their hands. :D

My shorkie or Yorkie-Shih is from the accidental breeding of my friends male Shih-tzu with her female Yorkie.  I imagine you usually want the mom to be the Shih-tzu as that is the bigger breed so she can carry the pups more easily.  I fail to see what difference it would make genetically otherwise, which parent was the male and which the female.  Could be wrong though, as I know that in humans, some traits are passed down from mothers, (such as color blindness), but only expressed in sons, and some traits such as baldness are said to come from the man's mother's side of the family.  Also, does it annoy anyone else that so many people get so angry when you say you have a shorkie?   They keep saying it is a mutt, as if that is an insult.  I love mutts, but a mutt is a dog of mixed, sometimes unknown, heritage, whereas a Shorkie is a hybrid which is a mix of two purebred dogs.  Also, all purebred dogs are originally mixed from two other purebred dogs until that particular mix breeds true and is then recognized as a breed of it's own, so who is to say that would not eventually happen with Shorkie's?  Anyway, it is late and I should be in bed.  Take care all.

Rowan is from an accidental breeding of a female Yorkie and a male Shih Tzu and she looks alot like her mom even tho she is starting to get some of the lighter coloring from her dad around her face and she is much bigger than both her parents. She also seems to be bigger than alot of the other Shorkies on here (I think they are all Shorkies no matter what anyone else says cuz whats the point of mixing up the names just cuz the parents are different ???) she is a lil over 7lbs at 4 months (exactly today!!! lol) but she has the feathery kinda coat too. Its causing some grooming stress but I think she is adorable and she has even managed to melt my mom's heart who swore she didn't like animals but especially dogs BUT came home with a bag of treats and a halter outfit thing and nail trimmers and a jingly ball for her last night  ;D

PS I added a pic you might be able to see Rowan's lil feathery hairs but since I try to brush them flat its hard to get a pic of them....also its just a cute pic of her with her security blanket  ;)

I am curious about what the sizes are of everyone's shorkie?  My Christie is just over a year old and is only 5 1/2 pounds.  Is this as big as she'll get?  Her mom is a Shih and her dad a yorkie. thanks
