Hi, I read about a little groomer trick for getting knots out.  I've tried it on my little Stinkum and for the knots that aren't too bad, it really does work.  Take some corn starch and rub it in the knots.  Let it sit for 10 minutes and then try slowly taking pulling the knots out but making sure you hold the hairs so you are not pulling on the skin because that hurts.  If the tangle isn't too bad, it should slide out easily.  As for the knots that can't be untangled, the most humane thing to do is to have your little one get a close shave.  At least you'll have a clean slate.  Also, if the hair is wet, cutting the knots out is little cutting into butter.  FYI, I've read that mats actually hurt and will compromise their health, especially in the legs and paws area.  The hairs on the paws must be trimmed or else it will start to hurt.  Just think about how it feels to walk around with rocks in your shoes.  Good luck!
