Treats
« on: May 13, 2009, 03:02:53 PM »
Ok I know totally silly, but I need some suggestions on treats. I went to get some and was so overwelmed ??? with all the choices I didn't even know where to start. It was the whole isle at Target and Petsmart! Then add in two kids telling me "I want to get this one for Cody" wasn't helping ;). I don't remember there being so many choices 12-13yrs ago, then again my mom did the shopping then;D so I'm sure that helped lol. I did get the treats to put in the kong, but other then that I'm lost!

Well like you said there are so many to choose from. I get Toby mainly Smako's or liver treats and I also buy the odd box of doggy bicky's. Another thing I buy that is really good for their teeth is denta bones or a pigs ear.

Another treat that they like is a raw bone.

For training purposes I mainly use smako's or cooked chicken bits. These are Toby's favourite so he will do any thing for them.Bribery LoL ;D

I buy Budda bones for Mai Tais teeth as well as Denta bones.  He likes the mint flavor and it makes his breath better.  I must say his teeth are whiter than my children's. LOL.  I also give him pupperoni for training because it is easy to break into tiny bits so he does not overeat while we are training.  I agree that there are so many more choices than when we were younger.

I buy Jolie a million diffrent kinds all the time. Her fav of all time is real liver treats. They are sold at stores like Bark and Fitz. They are hard and melt in the dogs mouth... No dog can resist them. However they are a little more pricey then your average treat.

But she loveeeeeees it, she just gulps it down lol without even biting it....l

I too have bought many a treat, but what I've been using for training is a product by Pet Botanics and it's called training rewards.  They are small moist treats made with real chicken.  He gets super excited for these.. matter of fact if we go outside and I don't have one with me and he's done with his business, he'll come running towards me, if he sees me clapping my hands he knows i have no treat and he'll just stop running and walk away.  :)  Otherwise he loves chewing on the small twist raw hide bones as well.  I bought Cash a small Kong and he has no interest really in it.  He played with once and hasn't touched it since.  Perhaps I should try to put the training reward treats in there.. though that wouldn't be much of a challenge.

I get these one treats I don't know what they are called but they have quotes from the movie Bolt. They are just shaped like flowers and Teddy seems to reallllly like them. They are too big for him so we cut them into little bits and give them to him after he goes potty outside or on his pee pee pads. We also give them to him when he does a trick a lot of times.

Well, they could be different treats. Or not. Well, I can't tell if your pup will like them or not, but I am just thinking that they are probably different treats.

Bully sticks, dogs love them.  But there are only a few good kinds out there.  The rest stink as in smell bad.

Of course be careful with the ingredients. I asked my vet what a good rule of thumb is and he said a bunch of stuff people wouldn't naturally think of. Which I wish I remembered, but I will ask again when I go and share it with you guys. However, Monty's absolute favorite treat is freeze dried liver. Its only ingredient is liver, so I figure we're safe as far as bad ingredients. Once he gets a whiff of it he will sit in front of you then do every single trick he's ever learned just to get you to give it up. HAHA!
