Anal Sacs
« on: May 01, 2009, 10:58:27 AM »
Ok, this is gross but I have to ask.  Has anyone had a dog that needed their anal sacs emptied?  I had heard that it's typical in small breeds that they'd need help in expressing their anal glands so as not to infect them.  This is something the vet can do, or you can do it yourself.  So I went online to see how it's done and I wanted to throw up just a little bit.  :P  Icky poo (quite literally)

Yeh It's not very nice but you dont have to do it alot or you may never have to do it. The biggest thing is diet. If you take your dog to the vet regularly he should check them and make sure they are ok. I would ask the vet when you have your visits.

I made a whole topic about it, it's called scooting... check it out...

Especially for small dogs anal sacs should be emptied by the groomer every time they go. Also a very dstrong fiber diet is important. I give Jolie HALO dog food which is very high on fiber and also a handful of organic high in fiber cereal.

Since I started this routine, she never scoots and has not had any problems.

asked roxy's groomer, he doesn't do it. said it's more of a vet thing.

really? I guess not all do it, but most do, it's part of the grooming experience... The vet did it once for us it cost $25

I've never heard of this nor had a problem with it. If you don't mind my asking, how can you tell if it's happening? ???
:D I love shorkies, especially T.B. :D

I've done Jemma's twice.  If their poo is soft, they tend to need to be possibly expressed more.  When the stool is more firm, the hardness of the stool when passing thru the glands, squeezes them automatically.  So some dogs don't need it.
Signs can be scooting across the floor.  But round worms and tape worm segments can also cause scooting.  Also you'll smell a foul odor.  IT STINKS!!!
Be kinder than necessary for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle
