Fishy odor...
« on: April 28, 2009, 06:26:27 AM »
Sometimes for the past month or so, I've noticed that sometimes Roxy emits this fishy kind of odor and it always seems to be at random times so I could never really figure out what it was. Finally I remembered to google it and it said that it could be either a Uriniary tract infection or that her anal glands needed to be emptied.

I never had a small dog, so I didn't even know of this whole anal gland issue. I was just wondering if anyone elses Shorkie has had theirs emptied and what the signs were to them that they needed to be done?? Also if anyones shorkie has had a UTI?? She is going to the vet for bloodwork this friday because in a few weeks she will be spayed, so if she does have a UTI it will show up there. Thanks!!

I know that one of the signs of a dog needing their anal glands squeezed is when they "scoot" their butts along the floor like they are trying to scratch or wipe something off.  My dog has never had the problem, but I know my friends miniature dachsund has many many times.  There is also a foul odor and sometimes a greenish discharge.  Well I have to go enjoy my lunch now...LOL.  Good luck.
