Training to sit and stay
« on: April 07, 2008, 01:00:34 PM »
I don't know if she's just too young and little, but my "Mattie" has not caught on to the "sit and stay" routine. She gets so excited, she can't stop dancing!  (cute!)  Still only 3 months, but I've read everywhere that young puppies can be trained these simple commands.  Anyone else having difficulties with this?

There are many ways to teach your puppy but the main thing you need to do is make sure Mattie is looking at you. The first thing I do is make the puppy look at you and say her name. Do this a few times with a small treat such as a pinch of a smako's or what ever you class as a treat. Once you feel that you can test this then walk away and call her name if she comes reward with a treat.

SIT.Ok then get Matties attention by showing that you have a treat in your hand. Hold it at her nose and move it slowly backwards over her head. If you have it in the correct position, the pup will sit automatically. Then give the reward with lots of praise. Once she is performing the action readily, you can start saying sit with a cherful tone. Continue to reward each time until your she sits on command. You can also use a hand signal when you say sit. This signal is usually done with the palm of the hand up and then flick the hand down towards the floor the same process can be used to get her to drop but change the hand signal to palm down.

Teaching your pup to stay is one of the hardest I found to do but with perserverence you will suceed.  ;) GOOD LUCK  Please lets us know how you get on.

I'm not sure if this is common with this breed of dog but it seems Ricoh is the most intelligent dog I (or my family) have ever owned. At approximately 16 weeks he has learned various 'tricks' - with usually only a half hour of training. All basic stuff but he does them on command quite well and consistently now.
Sit, Stay, 'Shake a Paw', Fetch (ball back to hand), Lay, almost stand on hind legs. Now, he is still a pup and has some bad habits! lol...he started to bark just recently, never heard a peep from him early on but is now barking to get our attention...a lot!  :-\ but at least its for us, not at others. He also learned the morning alarm, he is the secondary alarm clock...once our alarm goes off, he gets up out of bed and barks at us until we acknowledge that we are awake.
I really forgot how much patience it takes for puppies...

Ollie is so funny.  I trained him to sit and lay in the same day, but now when I get his treats out, he wants them so badly that all I have to do is look at him and he automatically lays down, tail wagging a hundred miles an hour.  He is so funny, I know I shouldn't encourage it but I just love him so much I give him the treat anyways.

it's so tough not to just give them the treats without earning them...because they are so cute  :)

Still trying to figure out the barking for attention - tonight he went to the base of our bed and barked (while we were still watching TV in the living room) because he wanted to go to bed. My wife usually takes him to bed with her for a few minutes, then he goes to the floor after a couple mins of cuddling.

Teddy is doing really well with the sit and stay training. I get out the treats and he sits automatically like Ollie. But with the stay training he just does the same thing. He stands up until I come back to him with the treat. After the treat, his tail goes 1 hundered miles per hour! He must feel so good about himself! :D
:D I love shorkies, especially T.B. :D

Miley has learned sit and "shake", does pretty well with the staying, we are teaching her to lay down or "play dead" she's coming along.. she'll also dance to get a treat.. soo stinking cute :)
I use 2 different kinds of treats/cookies. On type made by Wellness, called wellness bites are the treats I use when trying to train, she goes nutty for them, (like a drug). and the other cookies for anything else are just little mother hubbard peanut butter cookies, she likes them, but not as much as the wellness ones.
I like to distinguish the 2, helps with the kids, they just want to give her treats every time she wags her tail.
I agree these dogs are soo smart, I've had alot of dogs growing up, not one as smart as Miley.. I think she knows it too. she greets me when I come home and I melt..

Funny, my two shorkies, as much as I love them, are not particularly smart, but I don't mind.  Some smarter dogs can be a handful, as they come up with imaginative ways to misbehave...LOL.  Mai Tai seems to be smarter than Mojito, but that could just be because he is 10 months older.  Smart or not, they are cute.

I think cash probably has more witts about him than we are utilizing.  I have not trained him to do anything at all... I started training him to sit when we first got him, but never followed through.  He's just such a good well manored dog that I haven't needed to do anything.  He's pretty good with come, though sometimes he just stares at me.  I should probably do better by my dog and teach him a few things.

Cash, we taught Mai Tai sit, stay, wait, leave it, drop it, down, up, and come.  He sucks at the come command unless I have a delightful treat to give him.  He seemed to enjoy learning all these things and it kept him mentally occupied.  That is why I think it is a good idea for Cash even though he is well mannered.  I think the dogs enjoy the mental exercise as well as the physical.

Now that the kids are back in school and I'm still at home, I should have plenty of time to dedicate to training.  :)
