« on: February 19, 2012, 03:58:25 PM »
Hi
I was wondering if anyone was brushing their dogs teeth.
I have never brushed Toby's teeth. I have always used denta bones but I have noticed that Toby is starting to get tarter on his teeth and thought that may be I need to brush his teeth.
I would really love your opinons on this. ???

Angel won't let me brush her teeth. She has a fit. I then tried a product called Plaque Off which gets sprinkeled on her food . Then I heard a few negative comments about it so I decided to use dental sticks and so far her teeth are fine. But she's only one year old. Toby might be to set in his ways to start brushing him now. You could try Plaque off from Proden it was a few comments of stomach upset but they claim it removes plaque and tartar. And there are different kinds of sprays to spray in their mouth. I don't know if you would have this where you live. But you could order it over the internet.

I tried the Denastix and read the ingredient list. It's pretty bad and as I remember there is a f. Some form of sugar in it. Bad for teeth. Gracie is not a fan of the tooth brush. Tropiclean gel for teeth works really well. It is a natural product and I have seen some wonderful results with it.

I will check Plaque Off out it does concern me though that it causes upset stomaches as Toby has a very sensitive stomach as it is. Thanks for your help :)

I spoke to my vet about using dentastix and he didn't seem to think they were a problem but I wonder if that is the cause of the tatar. I will also find out about Tropiclean gel. thank you for you help too. ;)

I was worried about trying to brush his teeth as I have never brushed them and he is almost 7. He is pretty good about letting me look in his mouth. I have always made sure I have handled him every where reguarly so that the vet doesn't have any trouble with him. My vet always says that he is such a pleasure to treat.
Ha Ha the only place he dosen't like being touched is his feet. I don't know if dogs can be ticklish but that is what it seems. LOL ;D

Ava won't let me touch her teeth, but she is a great chewer of her bones, the ones I get for her are bully sticks they are expensive but worth the money and she loves them, they last a long time also.  Her teeth are beautiful too.  Here is some information on bully sticks.

BULLY STICK INFORMATION:
Bully Sticks are an all-natural, highly digestible chew made from bull penises.
The raw materials are sterilized and dipped in an all-natural, human grade liquid
smoke solution, then placed in an oven to dry. With our Natural Bully Sticks, we
simply skip the liquid smoke.

Bully Sticks are one of the few long-lasting natural chews for dogs that are also
very digestible and low in fat. They are a great way to maintain your dog's teeth
and gums while satisfying their desire to chew. Bully Sticks are a great choice for
all sizes and breeds.

Because our Bully Sticks are processed without the use of preservatives, we recommend
that they be stored in the freezer whenever possible. We know that is not always possible
due to the amount of space that large quantities or long length Bullies would need. In
this case, we recommend storing in a sealed container such as a Ziploc bag or plastic
tub with a tight fitting lid in a cool, dry location.

As with all dog chews, we recommend that you choose the appropriate size for each dog.
All pets should be supervised when given treats.

Thank you for your suggestion. I will look into it and see if I can get them. I have tried similar things like pork ears and trotters but Toby seems to get sick when i give him them. He has the same reaction to raw bone. I give him carrot though he love carrot. ;)

I don't bc Stormy won't let me and I feel incredibly guilty for it. I try, but ugh she is such a brat about it! She loves bully sticks, but I don't know if that's sufficient teeth cleaning.

Auburn, I didn't know they should be frozen. Do you freeze them? Are you supposed to let it defrost or just give them to her frozen?

I did not know they should be frozen, they aren't in the stores.  I just bought six of them and did put them in the freezer now though.  I'll not give them to her frozen though, doubt she would like that.  I'll get one out the day before.

Stormy had one of her baby teeth removed over the weekend. The vet said that tartar is starting to form :/ I told her how Stormy won't let me brush her teeth and she suggested Greenies, but said to make sure she's chewing them correctly or it can cause problems that will result in surgery (yikes!) or this other treat that I can't remember the name of, but will look up if anyone is interested. It's a rawhide type treat though, and I don't like Stormy eating that. The easiest solution seemed to be Plaque Off, she said it's a powder you sprinkle on their food and it works very well. The vet's office was out of it, but I'm thinking of buying it:

Just FYI :)
I forgot to ask whether it was only to remove the tartar, but I got

I get bully sticks for Gracie all the time. It's almost vital to have a supply of them for her as she is a chewing maniac sometimes. I usually get them from ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BEST-BULLY-STICKS-5-CT-12-STANDARD-NATURAL-Dog-Chews-/230756615050?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35ba2a838a
I get 5 for $15.48 and free shipping. I always get the 12" ones because they last longer. I throw them away when they get down to 3". I have never frozen them ore even refrigerated them. I did buy 5 of the odor free ones from best bully sticks . com this week because they were having 12% off for a couple of days. It was a big splurge for me. The are good for the teeth because they get kind of gummy with chewing and it cleans the teeth and keeps the tarter away. Much cheaper then having to go in and have the vet clean them. I use the Tropiclean gel too just to make sure her teeth stay clean.

Hi I have checked out most of these products but it seems that they all come from the US and the delivery cost are quite high thats if they deliver to Australia at all. I will keep checking here to see if any of the pets stores import them thanks for your help.

Ann, did you try eBay? A lot of sellers ship internationally.

We have used Plaque Off for a long time now and Charlie has had no problems with it, I'm not sure if it helps but he doesn't have very smelly breath  :)
For brushing our vet recommended starting by just sticking your finger in the dogs mouth every day, rub their teeth until they are okay with that, then start doing it with a tooth brush with nothing on it, then progress to using the dog toothpaste.
To be honest, we didn't get past our fingers (with gloves!  :P) but we did brush his teeth once, he didn't like it and his breath was nasty after, chicken flavoured toothpaste.. yuck lol

Ha Ha that chicken toothpaste sounds fun. Not!!! You hve convince me to try Plaque Off it is just being able to purchase it and getting it delivered without costing me to much. I will ring around some of my local pet stores and see if they have heard of it.
Thanks for the great story about the chicken toothpaste. LOL ;D
