New Shokie Girl
« on: April 07, 2008, 12:57:51 PM »
Hello again!  I finally got my shorkie puppy girl, and she's the cutest!  She is so smart, she learned how to go to the door when she had to go to the bathroom two weeks after movinginto my new house!  (Good girl!)  As for grooming, I don't want to cut her hair, although I know I have to.  Her puppy fur is so unusual; it has black "tips", so it almost looks feathery.  I need to put a picture up for opinions!  Anyway, I was thinking of a "puppy cut". Any other suggestions?  She's only 3 months, so she has a few more weeks till she needs to be groomed, but I'm thinking ahead.

Hi I know what you mean about loosing special features that they have as a puppy. Toby had really long eyelashes that curled up any woman would die for. These eye lashes would have had to of been at least an inch and a half long. I found a lady who came to my home and she was great she didn't shear him all she did was clip him just like in the hairdressers. Unfortunately she forgot one day about his lashes and cut them off. They never grew back the same way again. I don't blame her it's just one of those things because he was so fuffy it was difficult to seperate the lashes from the hair. I personally would leave getting her hair cut as long as possible and when you do don't let them shear her just clip.

Hope that helps. Have fun with the cutest girl in the world. :D

Don't clip her unless you want to but get her what I call a "wash and tidy".
It involves shampooing, blowdrying, clipping only the groin ( less knots and cleaner)/pads of feet/bottom and between eyes. also nails and ear clean. Also a good groomer will tidy up face and end of hair to make them look cute!!!
Just remenber if you don't cut the hair, you have lots of brushing ( use a slicker brush) to keep the knots away
Good luck and have fun

Thank you for your grooming advice.  I'm not sure what a "slicker" brush is. I  made the horrible mistake of trying to cut my shorkie's coat under her belly and got a piece of her skin instead. That was a week ago and I'm still appoligizing to her! Finally got her professionally groomed in a puppy cut and she looks tiny even though she's no longer a puppy. - ladywrite

That is one big reason why I don't like to cut Toby I get Taryn to do it she has the experience and know how. The trouble is has kyou have found out is that if you hurt them you feel so bad about it. Where if you have a groomer they know what to so to avoid this problem and also the equipment to keep them still.   ::)

oh your poor little Shorkie!! Accidents happen and I can bet you feel worse then she feels, but I bet she is loving the extra attention...lol
A slicker brush is a brush that has sharp little metal pins on it, (sounds harsh but htey not that bad). Most pet shops/groomers sell them so just ask and you shall find.
I'm glad you found a groomer and are happy with your new puppy!!!
