Having problems with Toby sleeping through the night.
« on: February 13, 2012, 03:33:14 PM »
We are renervating our bedroom so we have moved into the guest bedroom. Since we have moved into the guest bedroom Toby keeps waking me up to go to the toilet. I wasn't worried at first as he has done this occasionally. Know it is becoming a problem as it is not just once it is getting to be a couple of times a night. I'm getting concerned and I'm not sure if he is just stressed because of the change or if there is something wrong.
What do you think and do you have any suggestions. I would love your help as I'm tired and I feel I'm not really thinking straight. :-[

Hi Ann, In my opinion its sounds likes Toby isn't adjusting sleeping in the new room. His excuse of waking you up is having to go to the bathroom because he can't sleep. Because it started happening since you're in the different room that seems more likely. But if you're really worried about it then you might want to take him to the vet to ease you're mind. Seems like there's always something to worry about. We haven't been getting sleep some nights because when Angel here's our big dogs outside barking she starts to bark and she can bark loud! Spike our older dog seems to sleep all day and barks at night anymore. Maybe everybody else can help you with more reasons. Good luck!

I think you might be right that it is happening because we are in the other room. I have had one good night sleep last night as I made him go outside before we went to bed and he seemed to sleep. He has started to scratch a lot as well so that is a good sign he is stressed.
I hope he settles down soon as we will be in the other room for at least a month. :o
I really feel for you with your big dog, have you tried any thing to stop him barking ???

Ann, I think it is probably because you changed rooms, but if he pees when  you are out and keeps doing it, have him checked for a urinary tract infection.  Better safe than sorry.  it is pretty common in some dogs.  Hope you get some sleep soon.

Does he sleep in a crate?

No over here we don't crate. So I have never tried crating. Recently they have started to sell crates in pet shops so it is starting to take on here.

Yes Karen, that is one of the things I was worried about as I know what you have been through. He has been sleeping through the night, as long as I take him out before I go to bed. He does seem to pee but not a great deal. I will keep it in mind. I was thinking of taking him to the vet anyway just to be sure. It's just the cost. Money it is such a pain when you have to watch every cent. We don't go to the doctors unless we are really bad. Sorry venting!! LOL
Thanks for your Help!! ;)

Same here, Ann.  Money is sooooooooooooo tight.  I love my dogs, but have to save some for my kids.  Vent away, it does your heart good.

If he is not peeing more during the day than at night I would not be too concerned about a UTI. I have never crated a dog. I tried but flunked both times. All my dogs have been totally free to run the house once trained.
If he is scratching maybe there is an issue there? Does he just scratch at night or is it an all day thing? Have you painted or brought something into the home that could be bothering him.  They are really sensitive to scent. The scratching could be waking him up and he may just want your company as long as he is awake. Maybe a night walk before bed to help him to be a bit more sleepy?

Yes Ellie I think you are on the right track. I have taken him to the vet and he feels that Toby is reacting to the paint that we have been sanding off our wardrobes. He took a urine test and said that it seemed ok. So at least it doesn't seem to be that. I still take him out at night before I go to bed and he will let me sleep through the night.
I have been waking up my self alot in the night and I think it is the fumes from the paint. When I have woken up Toby has been restless and scratching.
Boy will I be glad when we are finished.  :o
