Shorkie tempermant
« on: February 15, 2009, 09:24:09 AM »
Hi everyone, im brand new here, & very glad i  found this site. ive had a hard time finding info on my new baby! He is only 6 wks now so i wont get him for afew more weeks but i was wondering about the general tempermant of shorkies. i know dogs are all different like people, but would you say they are split down the middle with being mellow sometimes & hyper (terrier) other times? Ive had shih tzus my whole life & thought a new baby with alittle more spunk might be fun:) Any info that you have for me would be awesome. thanks

Hi and welcome!
My Christie is over a year old now and is an absolute delight! She has a wonderful temper because as far as she's concerned, the world revolves around her! She loves our cat and they play together really well. Actually she LOVES everyone... all ages, sizes and genders.  She tries to be tough and will bark and/or growl at other animals (size doesn't matter) and yes even birds.  But if they should challenge her, she'll come running to mom and dad. And yes, she is extremely spoiled.

Hi

Great to have you on board. I think you hit the nail on the head. Their temprement is sort of down the middle. they are timid at times but can be fisty. I'm sure you will be wrapped.

Thanks for your responses:) Im so anxious to get him home & get to know him! Im starting to worry that he's gonna be yippy & my boyfriend cant stand that about lil dogs. i guess i can always train him to not bark. HOw about thier fur? Is it more like one or other? Or does it just depend on the pup?

Ooooorh Soooooo cute.

As far as yappy, I don't beleive that they are yappy dogs. They will bark but generally if you correct them as soon as they start barking they will stop. They are the greatest to train.
Their hair is very much like ours, they do loose a little now and then but generally not much. The only thing is if they get an allergy they will loose a lot then. You do need to groom them regularly other wise their hair get knots. Unless kyou have them clipped short.

Your pup remindes me of Toby when he was a puppy. you can see pic,c of him at the top of the screen. He is my baby he is 3 years on the first of March. As far as your boyfriend goes I will be very surprised if he dosn't fall in love your puppy straight away.
My husband thinks more of Toby than he does me I think he spoils him mored than I do.HaHa ;D

I have to agree with Ann on men spoiling shorkies.  My husband takes Christie to our small local airport every morning and has coffee with the guys.  They are all in their 50's to 70's and EVERYONE of them still gets down on their knees to play with her.

He's adorable.  Since I'm an avid reader I named my Christie after author Agatha Christie.  Maybe you can come up with something that is compatible with your interests?

Hi
As far as a name what I have done is looked at my puppy and thought of a few names then called it by each name and if it came to me when I said one of these names that's what I called it.
when I got Toby I had 2 names in mind Toby offcourse and Scruffy. I called him using the name Scruffy and he just looked at me but when I called him Toby he came straight away.

What are his parent's names?  I named my puppy Mai Tai because his mom is Daquiri and his dad is Cosmo, so I thought a mixed drink name would be appropriate.  Also, Mai Tai means very good, or out of this world in Tahitian. His has an older brother named Bailey too.  Don't know why the dogs were named after drinks, but I thought the name Mai tai was cute.  It was going to be that or Mojito.  Maybe you can think of a name to combine his parent's names.  Also, Ann is right.  Dogs like certain sounds better than others, so you might want to try the name out on your puppy.  Good luck.

before we picked up my roxy, my boyfriend and pretty much EVERYONE was thinking of names for her. we had a list of very few that my boyfriend and i both agreed on. i wanted to name her after her mother (bella), but he hated that name.

when we picked her up, we had no idea what we wanted to name her. the breeder had been calling her peanut butter and rockstar. we toyed around with naming her reese (after reese's pb), but ended up naming her roxy because they called her a rockstar. which i'm glad we did, because she is so fiesty and not a little priss dog haha.  ;D i think we spent the first whole day with her with no name. sometimes it's best to wait, they'll name themselves!

Hey !

Congrats! I was in your shoes just a few monthe's ago.

This website is great for advice especially about Shorkies.

So, temperment wise, my puppy Jolie who is now 7 month's is very well behaved. She is more shitzu, so I found that she is calm but since she is a puppy she is very playful loves everyone and everything. She recentley started to growel at us, usually when she REALLY wants something or wants to play. She has barked maybe 3 times her whole life, I am not even sure they were real barks even. She barked onlyyyyyyyyyyyy because she got stuck in the bedroom and couldn't get out. She barked once and we opened the door.

You will love the persoanlity of the babies, honestly this is my first dog, and it's absolutley perfect. I loved shitzu's my whole life but will continue to have shorkies.

Keep in mind as well Shorkie coats change as they grow. When I got Jolie she was more black then light, she had black everywhere, now she is a peach colour with a little balck on the tail, ears, and face.

Just keep your boy groomed and tangle free and he will be fine. No shedding only when you brush the coat.

wow, Jolie sounds like Mai tai who is also 7 months old.  He takes more after his Shih tzu dad than his Yorkie mom in personality, and in body type.  He has a Yorkie face though, and his coloring did exactly as you describe.  He was dark, but is now an all around peach with black at the tips of the ears and across the shoulders a little.  Jolie is adorable from the pics I saw.
