What are you feeding your pup?
« on: November 17, 2011, 02:23:15 PM »
Curious as to what you all are feeding your puppies and how old are they now and when do you intend to switch them to adult food.  Also what adult food will you be switching them to?

Ava Angel is 10 and 1/2 months old and around 7 pounds or a little less. I was feeding her Amicus small breed puppy food from Horizon. But the last week she's stated eating the big dogs food which is Natures Recipe lamb flavor. She likes it and eats more of it easier than the other food so I went ahead and switched her. I looked up on the internet when they can be switched and they said when they're done growing and thats around 10 months to a year for a small dog.

Thanks, Ava is 8 and a half months old and weighs 7 lbs. now.  She is eating really well she is eating Nutri Source for puppys, which is what she was getting at the kennel before we got her.  I can not buy this my area so when she goes on adult food I'll have to switch to another brand and not sure what that will be yet.

Mai Tai eats science diet, and Mo eats Royal Canine Urinary Diet because he has stones.  Neither of them is thrilled with their food and I have to add some table scraps to Mai Tai's to get him to eat it.  Can't do the same for Mo as he is not allowed to go off of his diet, not that it has helped him any.  He is full of stones again, and looking at a second surgery.

Raley ate Chicken Soup for the Puppy until he was about 9 months old.  I switched him to Wellness for Small Breed and Blue Buffalo.  Now he is on Nutro Natural Choice for small breed and Blue Buffalo for small breed.  I mix his food!

I was looking at Wellness and Blue Buffalo, maybe when it's time I'll try them.

So sorry to hear that Mo has to have more surgery, my prayers are with him. Bless his little heart.

Thanks Auburn.  I read your post about the little teddy bear  you lost at three.  I am so sorry for your loss.  We fear we may lose Mo at a very young age too.  The vet is astounded at the fact that 3 months after removing 9 stones from his bladder and urethra, he has about 15 more stones.  This does not bode well for the future.  If he develops stones again (despite the strict diet we have him on) after a second surgery, we will not be able to do this anymore and may just have to let him live as long as he can before he is either in pain, or the stones block his flow of urine.  So worried and sad about it.  He is only 2.

I'm so sorry to hear more bad news about Mo. My heart goes out to you. I'm keeping Mo and you in my prayers. You are going through a terrible time. Just keep praying. When Mandy had parvo as a puppy I went to church  and prayed so hard. and she pulled through so I know prayers helped.

I was wondering if you had heard of this food. If you scroll down there is a place you can click on to read more about it. There is a lot of research they have done about the diseases that have come upon modern dogs as the dog food companies have turned dog food into something that can exist on a shelf for months at a time instead of the food a dog would eat in nature. You can read about the first dog foods and how the companies have continued to change the feed. It is really criminal what companies will do to make money at the expense of the health of the animal. But that is something that happens with human food also. Anyway, there was a bit in there about kidney stones as well. I know Mo is supposed to eat the kidney food but it hasn't done him much good so maybe you could consider some options. He's so little it couldn't cost too much to feed him. Just a thought.

I just read an article about dog food. How what they say is in it isn't. And how they're making it not fit for dogs to eat. And a whole bunch of other things. I can't remember the name of the article. It scares me what we are feeding our dogs.

Well, I did a lot of reading when Gracie would not eat dog food as a puppy. I wanted her on a healthy diet as I had seen my beloved Shih Tzu fail so heartbreakingly as he aged. I thought I had done well by him but after I started reading more I realized that the Science Diet Matured Dog forumula I had feed him had a first ingredient of CORN! Here I was feeding him cow food with vitamins in it! I thought I had it figured out but now even the "better" foods I see are still not getting it right. While they are an improvement there are still problems.
If you read a bit on this site, especially the pet food timeline you will find out a lot about what is wrong with dog food in particular. There is a lot of good common sense info on this site and there is also science. It is very sad what is being done to our animals for the sake of the pet food industry.

I don't feed this brand of food but I do feed Stella & Chewy's which is on the same line as this. I am thinking of changing her to this though.

Oh my Ellie! What should we feed our dogs! I read about half of it. I have to read the other yet. Talking about autoimmune diseases. I have lupus and its severe. My brothers dog also has lupus. So animals do have the same diseases that humans have. My brother has always just given his dog dog food. He didn't feed him anything else except on rare occasions. Makes me think about what I'm eating. It's so confusing its makes me weary. What's right and what's wrong.? Let me know what you end up doing.

I think eating should be very basic. If it comes in a box or a bag it's not as God intended. The food industry has been trying to sell us food that is not really food anymore. They take stuff and dry it out and stick it in a box and tell you that you can eat it.
Our bodies were meant to consume fresh fruit and veggies and some meat. Several years ago I went on a diet of eating mostly fruit and vegetables with some chicken or turkey once a day. I never ate more than a slice of bread a day. I lost 40 pounds in 3 months without exercising. I did not count calories at all. I ate as much fruit and veggies as I wanted. I would eat a huge salad for lunch that was loaded with vegetables and lettuce. It was a real meal. Now I can't find good quality produce except in the summer when what is grown around here is available. The produce in the grocery stores is so expensive and not good quality. Much of our fruit and vegetables are genetically changed so they all grow to a certain size so they will all fit in a certain bag and they are resistant to disease. Our meat is full of hormones, antibiotics and steroids. Gracie's meat is better quality than mine because it is grass fed animals.
Dogs don't eat corn in nature or oatmeal or brown rice. But the dog food industry needs some sort of filler. Some of them got rid of corn and replaced it with rice but dogs are not supposed to eat rice or potatoes. When they cook the meat at least 3 times to turn it into kibble it takes all the nutrients and enzymes that the animal needs out of the food. A fairly healthy pet will do alright on the added vitamins that are in the stuff for a few years but then they start getting arthritis, diabetes, bad teeth, kidney problems, obesity from the various types of glucose they put in the food to get the animals to eat it. Just like humans get. Auto immune disease is a huge problem these days. Some bodies just cannot take the stress of the damage these artificial foods do to the body and they just stop functioning as they should. They say people are living longer but it is only because of pills they pop for the last several decades of their lives. That is not good quality life. Most of the disease that humans and animals suffer from are diet induced diseases.

We're lucky we get fresh beef from my parents when they butcher. I try not eating too much of it because I'm scared it's too fattening. I give Angel some of it because it's fresh. I also read another article where it said dogs need meat instead of just dog food because they need the protein from meat. But do you think 60 percent is too much which is what Wysong has in it. One peson says one thing and another says different. When they ate in the wild they ate that much protein because all the dogs ate mostly was meat. Our two outside dogs catch a groundhog or rabbit now and then and it eat and they both have the shinest coats and they hardly get sick.
