My 2 year old shorkie, Teddy, always used to pee on the same rug over and over again. He was doing that until he was about a little over 1 year old. The rug is green and shaggy, and has a strong resemblance to grass, so we thought that could be the problem. Also, he was just marking his territory.
This marking of his territory was partly caused by our 2 cats (7 and 4 years old) who are constantly teasing him. So, I am assuming that with time the marking territory thing will go away and your curtains will be fine.
A funny thing is...my dog never lifts his leg when he pees! Anybody else's male shorkies like this, or is it just my little guy?
Certain throw type of rugs with the rubber like backing have a scent that attracts certain cats and dogs to pee on them. There is something in the backing that has a kind of urine type of scent that we usually don't smell but the pet does. I used to have a bathroom rug that our dog would pee on now and then and there was a throw rug in the kitchen that would get it also. Those were the only ones it ever happened on. I read an article in a pet related magazine that talked about that backing on the trow rugs. I threw away those rugs and never bought another one like it and we never had an accident again.

I think you are right Ellie, I have noticed that the rugs with that rubber backing are the ONLY rugs the cats will have accidents on.  Thanks for mentioning, I will be getting rid of mine soon then too!

ellie, you may just have made my life so much easier.  I hate having my litter box in the bathroom but keep one there because when I only had two in the mudroom, one of my cats peed on my rubber backed bath mat.  I thought she was afraid to go down to the mud room because she was afraid of the dogs.  Now I think it may have been the rubber backing that attracted her.  Gonna try to move the litterbox and get a rug without a rubber back.  Thanks.  Let you know how it works out.
