When it happened.
« on: September 18, 2011, 07:45:51 AM »
I haven't been on here for awhile. First my computer is ordered but we have not received it yet. I have to find another computer. It's been a bad week. Angel got so sick Thursday evening. I was so scared. She found some old cooked chicken in the yard which I guess our other dogs didn't eat. Usually I find all of it. She threw up all her food and then kept throwing up. First it was green bile and then it was just white. She threw up about nine times. I called the the vet and left an emergency message and he called me back. He said to give her pepto bismol and pedilyte. My husband went to get it and she quit throwing up and I gave her that. It helped. My Friday morning she was back to her old self. Then Friday around 4:30p.m it happened. Angel and I were going to where my husband works six minutes away to go on the computer, when we were still on our rock road the Envoy started to loose control. It got it a rift on the rocks and I tried to get it under control but we went back and forth about four times and then we ran straight into the embankment. It was horrible! The Envoy flip onto it hood and then roll onto it side. I was still in my seat belt side ways when I saw Angel down on the bottom against my feet. I picked her up, she was so scared, and then I let the seat belt go and we fell into the glass from the broken window. Angel seemed to be in shock at first but she wasn't hurt. She might be a little sore but we pushed on spots on her and she didn't wince at all. I was so scared for her but she lived and is fine today. I went to the emergency room which took six and a half hours. Every X ray imagineable and I have a fractured pelvis and banged up bad and
very, very sore. The Envoy was totaled. But the important thing is were safe. I was more frantic about Angel than I was myself. I don't know what I would  do without her.

I'm so sorry for you Mandy - what a nightmare it must have been. I'm shuddering at the thought of what might have been. I hope you recover fully and quickly.

Thinking of you from over the water in England.

Best wishes, Tracey

Thank you both. I really appreciate it. I don't know when I'm going to get to a computer again. But thank you.

Bless your heart!!  I am so glad you and Angel were not injured worse.  A fractured pelvis really is no joke, though.  I hope that you will follow doctor's orders and heal quickly.  My prayers go up for you and Angel!

How terrible, you must have been so scared!  I am glad though that your injuries were not worse and that Angel is ok as well.  Please rest and take it easy so that you may recover quickly.  You will be in my thoughts and prayers!!

That is so awful. I'm glad your both alright but I don't think a broken pelvis sounds so alright. How are you feeling now? I know being in an accident like that can bump both of you up pretty bad.
It is a really good idea to keep your animals in carriers that are fastened by a seat belt while in the car. There are also seat belt attachments for dogs that you can hook to their harness while in the car to keep them from bring thrown in case of an accident. I prefer to keep Gracie is a hard carrier that is seat belted when I take her places because I know I would never be able to save her if the car went off the road or was struck.
I used to work as a paramedic and it was awful to see the animals that also suffered at accident sites.
Be well and safe.

Thank you all. You don't know how much I appreciate you saying this. I am thinking about getting Angel a car seat. This really shook me up! If she would just stay it in. I think she's spoiled already. Can they be kept in the front seat or do they have to go into the back seat?

Has she had any kennel/crate training?  If she rode in a kennel she wouldn't have a choice of roaming around.  Just a thought.  I would love for you to both be safe!

They have a number of different ways to keep a dog in the car seat but the cheapest way to go is an attachment that hooks into your seat belt on one end and attaches to the dog harness on the other end. You always use a harness to keep the dog from hurting it's neck should it get jerked around. If you go on amazon . com there is one called" The Doggie Catcher for Dogs." I think it is about $16.00. You can also just google "dog seat belt". I was going to get a doggie car seat for Gracie. They make really nice dog car seats that you hook your dog into that lifts them up so they can see out the window as you drive. I still may do it but for now I really prefer having her in her carrier. I think the car seat is nice for around town but I would not use it for any trip on the highway. The problem is that you have to disable the passenger side air bag to make it really safe for the dog. If you go to amazon do a search for dog car seat. Snoozer makes an nice one that I will get for Gracie. I think I'll get her a medium sized one so she has room to lie down if she wants to. I'll probably wait until spring because I won't take her out with me as much now that the colder weather is here. She gets cold so easily that I won't put her through that. I tried to post a link for those product but I could not for some reason.

I have a car harness for Charlie that just clips onto the car seatbelt so it can be used front seat or back seat. (You have to fasten the seatbelt up, as you would if you were sitting in the seat, then the harness clips onto the diagonal strap of the belt) I hope that makes sense! It's really good, Charlie sits in the front with me.  It cost the equivalent of about 13 dollars.

Amazon sells a lot of different configurations of the doggie seat belt. Some actually come with a safety harness that hooks into the seat belt of the car. Anything is better than leaving a dog loose in a car. They actually become projectiles in the car and can be thrown like a bullet into the driver or passengers in the car. Also there is also the potential of being thrown through the windshield. At this point I am not comfortable even putting Gracie in a doggy seat belt. I guess I am paranoid after seeing what I have seen at accident sites. I am more at ease right now having her in her hard carrier that is secured into the seat. At least if there is an accident she is shielded from objects that may go flying around and would hopefully stay in the seat.

The only place I take Ava in the car is to the groomer and the vet and once in awhile to Pet Smart.  She has a car seat, she sits in it very well, there is a strap on the back of the car seat that fastens onto her collar so she can not get out.  I'm really not  comfortable taking her in the car much.
