Rough Fall
« on: August 15, 2011, 09:53:31 PM »
So this morning I'm rushing out of the house bc I'm running late (as always) and I was going down the stairs while holding Stormy, my purse (which seriously weighs more than Stormy ha), and my laundry and I guess I lost my balance, missed a step and bam - next thing I know we're both flying down the stairs. Now, I fall down the stairs all the time (clumsy much?) and I've fallen while holding Stormy once before, but this fall was especially bad. She totally slipped out of my arms this time. I landed with my right leg behind me and just watched my baby fly faster than I could catch her and she got smacked into the wall. The noise was so LOUD. My heart dropped and I started frantically screaming asking her if she's ok - yeah I'm crazy, as if she's going to answer me ha. She didn't even cry, she just ran away looking scared. I couldn't get up so she came back and gave me kisses, it was so cute. I went to work but left like 20 minutes later bc I seriously couldn't stand the pain. Went to urgent care and I sprained my ankle, knee and two toes. So now I'm on crutches  ::) Stormy is ok. I called her vet and since she's running around and acting normal she said she should be ok and just to watch her closely. The crappiest part is that Stormy doesn't know how to go down the stairs (she's always been scared of them) so now I have to learn how to go down stairs with crutches while holding Stormy. Wish. Me. Luck.

Oh my gosh Pinky! I'm so sorry for you and Stormy. I couldn't help but get a smile on my face the way you were telling the story. You're going to be in pain for awhile but I hope it's won't be too bad and I'm happy Stormy's alright. You said you fell down before next time you better hold on!

I've been on crutches before and going up and down stairs is the most dangerous part. Did they give you proper training on how to use them? Usually it is best to put both crutches on one side and hold the railing with one hand and the crutches with the other hand. That or just slide down on your butt. How many stairs do you have? I guess you are going to need to leave a bit earlier now. I know sliding down the stairs on your butt does not sound very glamorous but it is much safer than going down trying to carry all you have with crutches. Those stairs sound like dangerous, too!

I agree with ellie.  Slide the crutches down first, then go down on your butt holding Stormy.  My sister was just at my house with a broken ankle, and she found sliding down my stairs (13 of them) to be much easier than maneuvering them otherwise.  Glad you were not hurt worse, and that Stormy is ok.  Keep an eye on her though.  Mo hit the wall when Mai Tai flipped him off of his back, and he was fine the first day, but in pain the second day.  He sprained his neck.  Good luck.

Sit down on your butt, put Stormy on you lap and slide down one step at a time.  First take your crutches and slide them down the steps before you go down, no falling that way or letting Stormy slip for another fall, next time you may not be so lucky.....

We have a lot of steps down to our laundry and Toby used to be so scared of them he used to go with me to the op of the stairs and then stop I would go down them and he would cry at the top. I would just leave him to cry and he eventually got the courage to go down them he still doesn't like them very much and will go out the fornt and come round the back if he can but he will go down them quit easy now. So may be you need to try forcing her to get down those stairs her self. As i think you will have the same accident again and it may end up a worse. Or you can just go down on your bum with her all the time.HaHa That ongers up images. :D

I do hope you get better quickly it must of been quite frightening. :)

I didn't think about but you do have to teach some dogs how to do steps. We don't have steps but I did buy doggy steps for Gracie to get up and down off the bed. She was afraid of them at first. There are three whole steps! I'm sure they looked huge to her. It took a few days but once she conquered them she was so proud. If it is a lot of steep steps I would be very careful with a little dog trying to do them. Our Shih Tzu took a bad tumble down some wooden steps when he was 7 years old. I had to take him to the vet as he was limping. They did Xrays and that is when they discovered his hip dysplasia.

Thats terrible Pinky! I hope you and Stormy are okay!! I find it so odd that some dogs won't go up or down stairs, I have never seen that before we got Charlie. We don't have stairs in our house (we live on the top floor & have renters downstairs) so he's not use to them but when we walk downtown I sometimes take him up these long stairs they have there and he's totally fine with those, but at my bf's parent's house he refuses to go up or down their stairs, so strange!

My first two dogs never ever went downstairs to the family room.  Ava learned right away she just flys down there, we don't want her down there because that is where the cat's food is and before we can get down to get her she has eaten half of it.!  I swear she only hits about three steps on the way down. lol

My cats have their own little table to eat on. Gracie is very picky about eating dog food but she loves cat food!

We have four steps leading into the house and at two pounds Angel flew up them right away. Years ago Mom would just feed the dogs catfood and scraps because they love catfood and didn't like dogfood. That was before all the concern with dogs nutrional value.

My cats have their own little stand too to eat on.  Makes life easier for all of us instead of trying to keep the dogs away from their food.  Cat food is way to high in protein for dogs, but they do love it so much.  I wish I could feed it to them as Mo is so picky, but too much protein is what helped lead to his bladder stones.
