Sentinel vs Iverhart vs Heartgard vs Interceptor?
« on: January 10, 2009, 11:55:38 AM »
Hello all.  We took our shorkie, Oreo, to the vet yesterday to get her checked out.  The vet said everything looked healthy.  We got several freebies from them, including one free Heargard Plus dose.  I know worm prevention is very important and was wondering what product you guys used.  I spent a couple hours on the Internet researching heartworm preventative medicine and found the products Sentinel, Heartgard, Interceptor, & Iverheart.  Reading other forums, nobody really recommended one over the other.

Although all the medicines prevent heartworms, some helped in preventing one or more of the following: whipworms, roundworms, tapeworms.  None were a definitive all-in-one solution.

Since we all have Shorkies here, I was wondering which you used and why.

Thanks for your help.

I use Heartguard because... well... my Vet recommended it.  (I'm also wondering why my shorkie doesn't look like any of those pictured above?) :D

I also use Heartguard recommended by Laela's vet.  Everyone in my family uses it as well on their pets.  Mainly it's a matter of choice though.

Oreo is the most adorable thing!!  Can't wait to see more pictures!

We use Heartguard too, but only because it is what the vet gave us.  I have to admit, I didn't look into any other ones.  I guess the vets give whatever the reps are selling in the area.  I will say that in terms of fleas and ticks, my vet says Advantix is much better for Ticks than Front Line.  I am in NJ where Lyme and deer ticks are prevalent, so I did research that one and it seems many agree that Advantix is better.  Good luck.

Hi when I first got Toby I used Inerceptor which was fine while he was little and not mixing with other dogs but then the vet advised me to put Toby on Sentinel as it covers all worms including heart worm. The only other thing I could do was have Toby get an injection every year for heart worm. If you are concerned about ticks you can use Advantix as it covers for that. We do have a tick problem but I would rather use a tick collar as I only worry about ticks for part of the year so I don't feel it is necessary to give it to him all year round. The main thing is that it covers all the things you need to cover for.

Hi Ladywrite

The pictures above are of my Toby. All our Shorkies are different, please don't worry about it. Your Shorkie could be purer than mine. As you know Shorkies are not classed as a pure breeds. But hey who cares they are our cute little dogs and we love them right LOL. ::)

Hi Ann, you are so right.  Every shorkie I've seen is adorable and probably as spoiled as my Christie.  We just got her a 4 month old kitten from the shelter and they play together all the time; chase each other around the house. So silly.

My shorkie loves my cats too.  He seems to like them better than he does other dogs.  One of my cats plays with him, but the other, an older female, will have none of it.  She hisses and spits if he gets too close.

Jemma uses Interceptor.  It also kills, whip worm, hook worms and round worms.  As far as tape worms, a totally different med must be used
