A lot of the pure bred breeders are puppy mills. They may have an AKC registration paper that goes with their pups but the quality is awful. Yorkies and other pure bred breeds have been bred to a point where they are full of genetic disorders that cause awful problems. My Shih Tzu was purchased from a pet store. His papers said he was born in Kansas. He was purchased in NY state. He had deformed hips. As he got older and the connective tissue started weakening he had more and more problems with pain and difficulty walking. We did everything we could do for him but this was the result of puppy mill breeders that breed one dog to another not caring about what genetic disorders or weaknesses they have. So it is true that the quality of a dog does not depend on if it is pure bred or not. These pet stores and online sellers are charging  what a good breeder would charge for their show or breeder quality dogs. But the buyer is getting a dog that is very likely going to have some sort of difficulty in life either in temperament or with physical problems. Not to mention the awful conditions these dogs live in. Made to produce litter after littler in a tiny dirty cage and then their pups are ripped away from them at 6 weeks old. Many of these pups do not survive. I know I'm off on a tangent. I just get so upset about these things. More attention needs to be brought to the public about this situation so more laws can be passed to stop them from harming anymore dogs or people.

That is why it is so important to never buy a dog from a pet store.  No matter what they say, they get their puppies from puppy mills, and when you buy a dog there, you support puppy mills.   I know, I know, I feel sorry for the little puppies there too, but the only way to prevent more dogs from being treated so horribly is by stopping the support puppy mill owners are given.  Also, it is best to buy a puppy from a place where you can go to visit to make sure you are not dealing with a puppy mill.  I know this is not always possible, as sometimes you cannot find a local breeder, but we all have to do everything we can to avoid supporting these awful people.  Sorry for the tangent I am off on now.

We got a full bred lab from this woman. I know now she inbred them. We didn't know when we got her but afterwards we knew. First of all she asked me if I was sure that was the puppy I wanted. Coco came up to me and was very friendly. I said I wanted that one. Coco was very slow and just didn't act right. I still loved her. But unfortuanely  the neighbors dog and Coco went for their walk and never came back. We should have inquired more and ask the woman more questions. That was our fault.

Went for a walk and didn't come back? I don't think that has anything to do with breeding. I guess who you bought from was a "backyard breeder" which is pretty much the same as a puppy mill breeder except on a smaller scale.
The best way to find a good breeder is to go online and find the local breeds club. Like there is a Yorkshire Terrier Club of America that has local groups. There are also local groups that show purebred dogs and stage their own shows in their area of the state. The different breeds have forums online that give tons of information as well.
Even with that you need to have references from customers because there are people who show their dogs but may still have health issues in their stock. After reading so much and talking to different people I am quite cautious about buying a Yorkie. How much you pay does not necessarily mean you will get a defect free animal either. I have looked into some Yorkie rescue groups. Many of their dogs have long term health issues that will be costly and truly heartbreaking to maintain.
