It's Offical
« on: June 09, 2011, 06:13:20 AM »
WooHoo!! I became a shorkie mommy yesterday. Well maybe not a shorkie mommy offically because I found out yesterday that my pup's mom is a Yorkshire T and the dad is a Shorkie (Yorkie/Shih tzu) so I don't know what to make of him. He's beautiful and looks just like many of the other shorkie babies I've seen. He is 8wks old and feels like he's no more then 2-3lbs. He is so tiny. He's dark brown with a white belly but his inner coat is more of light brown beige color. His father is a light beige off white color and when he was born he was also dark brown. My step sis said that he may end up being a shade darker then him.

My kids love him. My baby boy who is 4 calls him a smuzzy because to him he looks like those things from the UpSide Down Show. OOh yea his name is Dos we name him Dos because we have a cat named Uno, who is looking at him right this very minute still trying to figure out who, what, why, and where did this thing come from. I wish u guys could see how he keeps pacing the floor. I think if he could talk he would be saing I don't believe this. He's being a big sport about it though, so far he hasn't shown any agressiveness towards him which is something I was worried about. He's never been around any other animals.

Sorry for the long post. I'm excited can't cha tell. I'll probably be posting more often.

I will try to post some pic's later today.

Congratulations! It doesn't matter what the parents our just so you love him. It's so exciting isn't is. Every day is a new experience with them. Angel has a thing with vacuums. Whenever we vacuum she runs around so excited and keeps barking. It's sooo funny!

I am so happy for you. I remember how much I fell in love with my tiny little darling when I first got her. Your dog is a Shorkie. He is half Yorkie and half Shih Tzu. I was trying to figure how you would turn Shorkie around the other way and I could not think of any way to say it unless they said York Tzu and that would just be silly. The main thing is they are a half part of both breeds.
Hope you can post pictures soon.

How exciting!  I hope you take lots of pictures.  They really change before your eyes like a human baby!  My Raley is like your baby--he has a yorkie mom and shih tzu dad.  Either way they are all sweet!  I would not trade Raley for any other furbaby in this world.  His disposition is so easy and gentle!

ellie, I agree it is a shorkie too, regardless of which parent is the Shih-tzu and which is the Yorkie, but the people who sell them online and claim to have come up with the mix will disagree vehemently.  They insist that if the mom is the Yorkie, then you do not have a shorkie.  So nutty, but I guess they think it is important because that is how they make money.

Honestly, the people online are there to make money. These are not purebred dogs and never will be. Yes, the original mix was a female Shih Tzu and a male Yorke but that just created a cute little designer dog not a pure bred dog. I occasionally look at what they are selling at the pet store at our local mall and they are selling every possible combination of different breeds. Of course these little dogs are popular because they are adorable and certain famous people have brought public attention to them by owning them but people like these online advertizers are ripping people off by charging huge amounts of money for what amounts to a mix breed dog. At this point any person with any type of dog can breed their animal to any other breed and call it a "designer dog." It takes decades and many generation of breedings to create a new breed of dog and I don't think that is the intention here. This type of breeding, for the most part, is being done to make money not to establish a particular breed. Don't get me wrong. I am not against breeding one pure bred dog to another type. I am against people taking advantage of consumers by saying that they have produced a particular breed and charging huge amounts of money for them.

I was at the pet store while someone was looking at a 2200 dollar labradoodle, and I said to her, "you realize that is a mutt, right?"  Don't get me wrong, I like mutts better than purebreeds.  They are generally healthier because of the larger gene pool.  I just wanted this lady to see that was a ridiculous amount of money to pay for a dog.

Also, I don't know if you have seen it but some of those breeders of shorkies on line get downright rabidly nasty with each other.  I think they could all be puppy mills.

One of the shorkie breeders that is really nasty lives less than an hour from me.  I would not buy a puppy from her if I had to.  She and another online breeder have had war and a lawsuit came out of it.  So sad that puppies are caught in the middle.

What really gets's me why do purebred owners think their so much better. It just earks me to death. How do they think their purebred came to be. They didn't just appear as a purebred. Our first dog when we got married was a purebred chow. I loved her, and I had a couple other purebreds of the years. But besides the chow, Angel, Mandy and Spike mixed breeds, are the ones I loved the most and the best dogs and puppy I ever had. I was a Petsmart once with Angel and a woman with a purebred shih tzu looked her nose down at me because Angel was a shorkie. Earks me ugggh!

I didn't mean to cut anybody down with a purebred. I had them. I'm just saying mixed breeds are just as good of a dog as a purebred.
